Silverstone Auctions Race Retro sale

A Countach, a Carrera GT, an XJ220 and a Testarossa too - it's a feast of exotica at Race Retro!

Look away now if you're after an auction bargain. The Race Retro sale from Silverstone Auctions is crammed full of high-end supercars and sports cars, many exceptionally low mileage and offered in immaculate condition. It's probably an auction catalogue to lust after then, rather than prepare your bids for.

Got a spare £150K?

Examples? There's a Mercedes 190E Evo II estimated at £140-£160,000. It's not just M3s then! With just 1,700 miles on it and a recent major service, it could be the finest Evo II in the world. And that spoiler...

Elsewhere there's a Carrera GT, estimated at £400-£450,000 and wearing the numberplate BO53 CGT. Hmm... It was once owned by Gerard Lopez and has covered 18,000 miles. Is there room for values to climb further? For fans of older supercars, see this gorgeous left-hand drive Jaguar XJ220, estimated at £255-£295,000 with only 2,600 miles. And for those with a penchant for the 80s, what could be more of that decade than a Countach? This Pearl Yellow LP400S has been through a few colour changes in its life and has 38,000 miles recorded. Demand is clearly still there for the Countach, with this car expected to make anything up to a quarter of a million.

Low mileage, rare colour - what a treat!

Let's look at the slightly more affordable end of the auction. There's a rather interesting Cortina Lotus at £15-£20,000, for example. An estimate of £30-£35,000 sadly enough looks quite reasonable for an E30 M3 now, here thanks to a fairly high 125,000 miles. Finally, while we're on the fast saloons, who doesn't love a Lotus Carlton? This right-hand drive car has had five owners but has been driven only 77,000 miles in 25 years.

A final few highlights, if you're tempted. There's a Datsun 260Z Super Samurai, a stunning Capri 280 Brooklands and a CSK Range Rover in an incredible line up. See the full catalogue here, and don't get too carried away bidding on February 27/28!

I love the EVO II's but they fall into my category of cars which I would love to own to look at but would ultimately not get used enough as I'd just be too self conscious to be seen in one. To be fair though the F1 LM is in the same category so it's in good company! I'm sure I can remember reading a few years back that a few 0 mileage examples were discovered in Germany and sold to Japan for 100K each?

I also love the XJ220 and it's one of only 2 Jag's that I really desire, the other being the current XJR, but I can't see why they are suddenly estimated at 300K odd when only a few years back they weren't even selling very well for half that.

I can't believe there's no mention of the Lister XJS in the article as well.

Who can argue with a twin-supercharged V12?

XJ220 looks lovely as well.

It makes me cringe to think nearly 20 years ago I "slept" on whether to buy a Countach LP400S or not I think for £38K. It was about £8k more than my intended budget, so went for a TVR instead. Now looking at a possible quarter of a million for the same car! Oh how do I wish that I was a bit more reckless with my money when I was younger.

Lister Jag looks like a bit of a bargain - est. 38-42 is a very cheap way to 200mph, that sum would buy only a fraction of most similarly performing exotica- don't get why they are such good value - it has looks, power and racing pedigree. I guess there is a lot of investment buying at this level, and the money tends to move in herds.

Running costs scary of course - but if I had money and garage I would have that in an instant, over all the others.

Why are Carrera GT values so much lower than Enzos?

Much higher production numbers would be the main reason. Also probably Porsche vs Ferrari badges, the difficult clutch in the CGT and it's slightly sketchy reputation.
