I'm thinking of changing my Range Rover 4.4 Vogue and was initially going to upgrade to a slightly newer model and go for a TDV8, which to be fair I'm still quite likely to do, but also thinking maybe to have a change and go for a Cayenne Turbo, and just wanted to know how the 2 cars stack up overall, I know the Cayenne is significantly faster, but I guess fuel economy is broadly similar?, I get about 15-18 normal driving and up to 22-23 on a motorway drive.
Reliability wise are there any weak points on them?, and how much are they to fix?, I know everyone will say they will be much more reliable than an RR, but in fairness all I've had go wrong on mine has been an air suspension compressor which was about £400 and a battery, other than that has just been regular servicing, is the air suspension on the Porsche more reliable or does it have its niggles like the RR system too.
Anyway, would be nice to hear thoughts from owners, particularly people who have driven both!!.

Hi

Mpg wise i would say is similar , I got high 25's coming down m6 last week

Make sure updated metal coolant pipes fitted and coolant Ts at back of engine replaced

Mines had the air suspension compressor rebuilt , think actual shocks are quite reliable, goes round corners very well for its size

They suffer some electrical niggles and sunroof drains can block

Cardan shaft (propshaft) centre bearing and rubber bush goes

I hated them when they came out , I had a 928GT then , I love my cayenne TT

I'm on my second, had a 05 MY Turbo and replaced that with a 06 MY Turbo S that has pretty much every option fitted and took a while to find.

Performance is jaw dropping, suspension feels firmer on all settings on the Turbo S.

Coolant Pipes,
Driveshaft bearing,
Rear Hatch Shocks
Brake servo plastic pipes
Parking Sensors

All above are things to check, front disc's on the Turbo S are the size of dustbin lids and are only available from Porsche apart from that running costs should be similar between the two.

Great cars, that cope with everything thrown at them.

Are the coolant pipes pretty easy to check yourself?.
Also I'm not sure, but am I right in thinking the early Cayennes are pretty good off road too?, I've used the RR a bit and it's been faultless but from the sound of it the Cayenne is almost as good while offering a far more composed drive on the road?.
Other thing I was going to ask is, what is the deal with the Porsche entertainment system of about 2005, do you get Bluetooth and aux connection or is it a case of fitting an aftermarket solution?.

If it's anything like the one in my 53 plate Cayenne - and I'm guessing it's identical - it may have been fitted in 2005, but it would have been "current" technology about 10 years before that.

It's functional. If you want ipod / bluetooth etc. you're looking at a replacement and/or something like Dension.

2005 - 2006 MY offered a PCM 2.1 system DVD based (unit under drivers seat) and had analogue TV tuner option and SIM card based phone solution with optional handset in console. Reversing camera also hooked up to display.

No bluetooth or AUX in with out a 3rd party solution being fitted.

Apple Airplay units and this product by Dynavin appear popular replacements: http://www.dynavin.com/products/n6_pc.php, any replacement unit will need a optical adapter as Cayenne uses this.
