I am going to stick with my current car an old Golf wait the extra year or two until I have 3 years NCB save up seven grand (£7K) at a push and look for a "Supercar" that I can use everyday if the occassion calls! What could I get inspiration would be nice from you knowledgable guys, I was looking at a E46 M3 or CL600 or 928 at around £5K or SLK55 AMG or the 3200GT at £7K. I was thinking a sensible V6 Audi but defo want a cheap "supercar" now and am happy to wait for NCB and savings 😃 just want inspiration tbh while I save. Thanks in adv

I think your definition of 'supercar' is very different to 99% of the people who will be clicking on this.

M3's/SLK's are sport cars at best.

I understand I wont be getting a true supercar at £7K
But WhatCar describe the E46 as "Supercar pace" and Mike Brewer said the 928 was the "ultimate 70's supercar" if I save work hard and wait for enough NCB I can do it, anyone can achieve there dreams if realistic and put their mind to it👌

For that sort of money, the closest you'll get to a super car will be something from the 90's, Japanese and turbo charged.

I suggest you research the pitfalls of buying a 928 at that kind of price. If you buy one at £7k you'd better have a further £15k spare to sort the prospective problems. Also, it's a GT, not a supercar. If I were you I'd look at something that you could afford to repair if the worst were to happen. You could buy a TVR chimaera for around that price, and assuming the chassis isn't rotten as a pear everything else is relatively affordable to fix....

You could get super car performance from a kit car maybe?

Don't get hung up on that word "supercar". It's an overused generic term that means very little anymore. There's a lot of fun to be had at £7k if you broaden your horizons.

What he said.

I had a 1990 928 S4 about 10 years ago, paid £7.5k for it and run up servicing and maintenance costs of over £6.5k in just 18 months of ownership. These are not cheap cars to run and as the previous poster stated they are not Supercars not even sports cars by today's standards.

They are not slow but the motoring world has come along way since the 928 and I think most would find them a little disappointing, especially those that have been led to believe that they are Supercars!

And Don't quote Mike Brewer, he called the Sierra Cosworth a Supercar!

Anyway that's not to say they aren't great cars because they are but they are now classics and need to be seen as such and I think for those with deep enough pockets they are a really good investment as old Porsches are going mad at the moment and the 928 is Likely to be next.

Hi, as others have said none of those are supercars, some maybe classed as super cars.
I'm all up for helping youngsters on there way with some encouragement so a few ideas for you.
Not sure your total budget but an SLK 55 is not likely to be available at that level and if it is then it will have loads of miles or worse, have a look at an SLK 32, it's the old shape but with a set of big wheels could look tidy enough and they are crazy quick, 360bhp in a little package.
A std Porsche 968 may still be in budget ,or a 944 S2 and bits are cheap enough.
The jap stuff as someone said, not my area but Nissan 300 zx is it and Mitsubishi 3000 GT, check price of parts though.
Early scooby or evo in nice condition, older the better can only go up in value.
Corvette maybe ?

Good luck with your project.

I have some irrational thing against Porsches but that does appear to be rather good value. So what are the pitfalls of buying a 15 year old Boxster?

Not a supercar but buy the top bk e36 evo you can get. Must be coupe and manual and well maintained.

Now's the time.

I'd be looking at a 350Z if I were you. I had one new in 2004 and loved it. Great looking car. Lovely V6 engine. Quick enough with 280bhp. Cheap to maintain and pretty much bullet proof reliability. You can get a reasonable example without silly high mileage for £6K.

OK it's not a supercar by most peoples definition but it's definitely a sports car and a lot of fun. I'd rather have one of these than a Boxster any day.

The plastic engine that could cost you £5k to replace easily.
996 could be in budget and are a fabulous car BUT make sure you have access to enough money should the worse happen.
I am a huge Porsche fan by the way, 3 new boxsters, 4 911's of various types, 924 968, currently have late 996 targa with 3.6 lump, but I have got space on my Barclaycard just in case smile

You'll want to get this moved to General Gassing for a better response. Even then, don't call them supercars, you'll get ripped to shreds.

I'd start with something Japanese in your £7k budget. Will give you some good performance and hopefully won't break the bank.

As already mentioned Nissan 300ZX, Mitsubishi 3000GT, Nissan 370Z, but also Mazda RX8. You might be able to get an Mazda RX7 or Toyota Supra twin turbo within your budget, will be tatty but if you are willing to do the work yourself, then perhaps.

Good luck.
