Very dull post alert....

I've been driving a new Focus 1.5 diesel for the past week.

Covered 835kms (521 miles). Was full of juice when I got it and I've just brimmed it again this evening. Right to the top. Could only get 33.49 litres in it. 72mpg!!!!

6 speed manual
Well run in with 10,000kms on the clock at 10 months old
A/C used 80% of the time
25% urban use and 75% cruising (at 110km/h)
Has stop start
Virtually no engine braking - I think it 'freewheels' off throttle like the mothers new A4.

If it's reliable long term, it seems super cheap to run!

Not looked under the bonnet but it feels and sounds like a 4cyl. Virtually silent cruising and just a little gruffness when giving it some welly, which I only did a couple of times on short motorway entry slips.

Consider that the 'full' you got it with didn't have it with the filler pipe full also. You're probably over-estimating by a few mpg...

And that car doesn't have sailing - you need either an auto (DCT or planetary) or an e-clutch solution. Neither of which the 1.5 diesel Focus has.

Still, they are very, very frugal things.

If the filler neck wasn't full when I got it, then it can only have done more than 72mpg? The reverse would be true if the filler neck was full before, but isn't now?

I definitely took my time to make sure it was 100% full to the top of the neck tonight as I have a bit of a drive to the airport tomorrow and I still want it to look full when I get there smile

I am a fan of good and efficient engineering, however if you could live an extra twenty years by eating only boiled red lentils I still don't think it would be worth it.

Seems pretty good. No reason for a pay increase this year then for the employees.

I have just sold my Mk5 Golf Gti and bought a 2013 1.6d focus Zetec.

I'm sick of the roads/road users round my way so have just given up for now.

Anyway the Focus seems to run on fresh air and has bags of torque.

I got a good deal on an ex-mobility car with 5k miles on it for £9.5k when it cost nearly £20k new.

Not bad for a Ford.

Sir. I find it VERY hard to believe that you can get that fantastic mpg from your Focus. So I did a calculation based on your figures and came out at 70.78mpg.
Although this is close to your figure - I am nothing short of incredulous that you can achieve that figure. I suggest that you do the same again and then get back to us just to verify what you claim.

I saw 35mpg on my Ford the other day when just cruising at 60mph on the M25, which I thought was astounding. Still happy with it's regular 21mpg for fast M and A roads, tiny bit of London and country hooning.

It is a 5.0 V8 though biggrin
