Griffith 500 non pas tyre size query

Hi All,
New set of tyres on my 96 Griffith imminent. Currently they are shod with 225/50/R15 at the front and 245/45/ZR16 at the rear. Checking in my handbook though says 205/55/ZR15 for front and 235/50/ZR16 at the rear. I understand that the non pas cars, as mine is, had narrower tyres.
I only use my car for road use (no track days) so what is the benefit of either width tyre? Will the 205 fronts noticeably lessen the low speed steering effort required?
What is the current wisdom?
