Hi,

I was reading this -

http://www.revolution-porsche.co.uk/porsche-996-bu...

Are the 2003 996 c4's, prone to the issues listed such as IMS bearing failure and RMS seal?

Thanks

Same engine as all the rest of the non-GT or Turbo 996s so yes is the simple answer.

okay thanks, I assumed the 3.6 engine was an improvement over the old 3.4

As the other poster has said, they can suffer from the same issues as the other 996 models. However the engine in the turbo variant isn't prone to the same IMS, RMS, bore score issues as it's a different engine. Another reason to go for a turbo although the C4S is a lovely car. I had one a couple of years ago and prices seem to be on the up.

I don't like the look of the first one purely due to the wheels, roll cage and daft seats. It may mean that it's been tracked?

Quite like the look of the blue one though. Those silver speaker grilles and floor mats need to go though.

The seats in the first one are likely replicas, genuine GT2/3 Seats go for big money nowadays

The second one looks lovely, the color works well

Along with the blue mats, it looks like it's been lowered and I'd question that and see what other mods have been done to it.

It just doesn't do it for me but each to their own.

The first one has been for sale since July 2015 - I enquired briefly about it at the time as they had another C4S for sale... It'd be interesting to know what factory options are on the sticker

Dont get too hung up about RMS. Lots of vested interested in making it out to be a bigger issue than it is. TBH if you have a very leggy 996 then you will nee to start budgeting renovation costs sooner or later anyway

RMS is just an oil leak. Many of them do it.

IMS (bearing) is the nasty one.

If the options codes / history check out that's just gone from a not very nice car to something very tasty. Return the wheels to stock and it could be lovely.

The first one I'd avoid due to all the reasons already mentioned.

Second one perhaps, but I think £18k is strong money for over 100k miles.

The eBay one is a tip and worth less so £21k is rather on the optimistic side.

I bought a grey manual coupe in December for £20k with 72k miles and solid history. Had it inspected, obviously will need some work done but I know what is likely coming over the next few years.

A few things to look for:
Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) transforms the car. Mine had it fitted by a previous owner bill was £3k! Probably about the most desirable option.

BOSE / PCM sat nav - these are all terrible systems nowadays and most swap them out - I put in a pioneer carplay unit. The PCM and/or BOSE is more hassle to replace than a straight radio - so argueably cars without PCM or BOSE are slightly more desirable.

The last cars (2004 MY I think) Porsche stupidly switched to 2 year service intervals. In my view that is just too long with the known engine issues. It might have had oil change every 12 months but I'd personally avoid a car that in its early life did quite a bit of mileage on 2 year changes.

RMS not a massive issues as others have said. IMS is the concern - preventative replacement various options, eg http://www.rpmtechnik.co.uk/servicing/fixed-price/... combined IMS replacement and new clutch is around £2k.

My view on the market for a manual coupe with good history and no silly modifications etc
<40k miles, few owners, £27-30k+
50-80k miles, typical circa 5 owners, £20-25k
100k+ miles, 7+ owners, <£20k and should be more like £15-17k

Colour preference that the market values
1. Black/Grey
2. Blue
3. Silver - I'd say half of all cars are silver so definitely worth £1-2k less than the above.
Others - red, yellow, etc are generally rare and a very marmite choice.
White is super rare and probably worth more to the right buyer if you find one.

A C4S with factory buckets, factory cage, factory rear seat delete, factory sports exhaust & factory debadge? For £18k??

It's possibly a massive bargain.

These must certainly be on the up. I traded in my minted black 2004 4S cabby this time last year which had 50 odd K under it and had a full engine rebuild with upgraded IMS and about every bit of spec going including PSE/Xenons and BOSE and got the ptrincely sum of 16 1/2 for it, which was maybe a couple of grand beneath private sale money at the time!

I've had 2 of these over the last few years, a grey coupe and the black cab one I mentioned above. I've not had any drama engine-wise with either of them nor the other 911's I've had (996 3.6 C2 and 997.1 C4S Cab). I did find the 996 a bit dated going back to it and TBH that was what made be get rid after about 6 months, that coupled with various electrical charging gremlins. They do look lovely and with the PSE they sound great too.

They are on the up big time, dragged up by Turbo and GT3 values, and why not? They are a great
car, and still at an affordable value for money price.....
Do you know that something like only 10% of these models suffer the issues described above, and crucially
almost all of them sub 40000 miles, if you find a 60 70k car chances are it wont need doing ever, don't listen
to all the drama, don't get sucked into it

Mmmmm that's good mine will have 80k + by the end of next week when we get home from the Alps, I'm glad to hear it's less likely to need a trip to Hartech.

Even if it went to Hartech and had the full beans rebuild its still cheaper than going 997.2.....

That's right, and I bet its all the better for being driven instead of being parked up and bummed about.
As I say, leave the drama for the women and the h*********s

Hope you enjoyed your trip, lucky you.
