Hello all,

My Fiance's 2011 Z4 3.0 has an intermittent roof problem, it stops mid cycle and then just doesnt work, you then have to open it again, and it still wont close. When it does close, it bongs constantly saying the roof is not closed properly. Sometimes you can't open the boot. Its been in to BMW about a year ago, they replaced a pump and re-set parameters.

Last week the same happened where it just wouldnt close so we took it to BMW again, and left it with them a week. They said that they "reset parameters" and tested it, its all ok.

Car got delivered back, and its been bonging every now and again saying roof problem, or roof not closed.

Car is in under BMW warranty.

Any help or suggestions? tempted to try another dealer, but unsure whether the outcome will be the same.

Wish I could help but my Z4 is an E86 so roof doesn't open!

If you don't get some help here you might want to have a look at the Z4 Forum - someone on there may have had a similar issue.

If it's under BMW warranty then keep taking it back until they've fixed it. Also check the handbook and make sure you are opening and closing it correctly and see whether you can manually close the roof. If you can manually close it and it's certain it's closed then that might reset it some how.

My understanding is that there are sensors which relay the position of the roof to the CVM (convertible module). These sensors can relay faulty information but can be reset by a dealer which it sounds like they have done. I would imagine next step would be for these sensors to be replaced, especially if under a full warranty.

I only know this because I fault read the codes on my own E89 last night and it listed a fault with one of the roof sensors. I've never had any issues with the roof at all so simply reset the code - I can post it up once on my own laptop and you can Google the code, it brings up quite a few threads about faulty roof motors/sensors which may be of help.
