RE: Fiat 124 Spider: Pic Of The Week
Friday 10th June 2016
Fiat is totally upfront about the new 124 Spider cashing in on the heritage of the original. And, after driving it earlier in the week, it seems it's been successful. No, the new Spider isn't a sports car. It's a roadster, in the classic mould. Job jobbed!
Fiat 124 Spider: Pic Of The Week
The spirit Fiat has channelled into its new 124 Spider in a period press pic of the original
Time then delve into Fiat's archive to find a picture to sum up the spirit of the original car. And, in fine style, this very 70s press pic does just that. Alpine vista? Check! 70s brown paintwork? Check! Smiling female passenger? Check! Here comes the summer, and all that.

There's something very graceful & simplistic about the early 124 spider - and even the coupe. The spider retained its shape for it's long lifespan (US bumpers aside), but the coupe went through three major facelifts. The first one, the AC was gorgeous. The BC took on that early 70's corporate look, and I must admit it was my favourite. The CC looked hideous, so industrial it looked intimidating.
I have the original 124 AS brochure somewhere, and it's full of stunning images - like this one. Great pic Pistonheads.

AC, BC, CC:-
Personally, I think the new one looks better than the BC/CC but not as nice as the AC. Still, not a bad effort overall...

This modest car had a scintillating appeal at the time. Marku Alen brought a soft top 124 Spider to forest special stages on Lombard RAC rally. It was amusingly incongrouous.
Alen was adored for his exciting style, summed up with his deadpan Finn-glish catchphrase "I make Maximum attack."
I yearned much more at the time for the sexy 206 Dino, and the gorgeous Pinninfarina Fiat Dino Spyder.

very pretty car. I remember the Morelli ice cream family in Broadstairs having one, which I believe was orange, with the number MM74. Anybody else remember?
I used to have an 850 Sport Coupe, in a dark green - used to admire it's reflection when I drove past big shop windows like the Army and Navy store in Maidstone. Sad.....
