I took a picture of my cars together over the weekend. It struck me that every car has a roll cage and harnesses in it. In deference to comfort, some do have carpets. Two actually have air conditioning - although it only actually works in one of them. On saying that, i never use it anyway. One of them doesnt actually have any windows that open, but it does have a slider that lets a bit of air in when required and often a lot in when it isnt.
None are comfortable, all of them are noisy and speciffically set up to be waywardly difficult and not in the least bit driver friendly.

I suspect that none of these cars would fit as much as half of the criteria required by the committies that think up new car concepts at Porsche or any other major manufacturer. In fact, they would probably be laughed at.

So, to my question: Who in their right minds would want to own cars like this any more, and am I mad to cosset them?? Do they have a place only in the history of motoring or will they - or rather thier concept, ever form part of our motoring future?

Please note. Any poster who mentions Brexit will be held in contempt of thread and punished accordingly

such tough time deciding which one of your cars I would pick if I could have one - the top-3 are the 996RS, 993 and 964 ... just not sure about the order

I think the 993 would win it

and to answer your question - I think all of these are cars of a bygone era and nothing comparable will be offered by a major manufacturer. The closest might be the new TVR once it is released.

I can't see a 996 RS.

Steve you are mad. You need to add something that will cosset you on long journeys. Nothing expensive - something like this would do the job http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/m...

Lovely collection of real analogue cars that can only be appreciated by true petrol heads.

The truith is that they are all lovely to drive and not that unforgiving providing you make an effort to drive them properly. Such a shame that cars like this may not be made again. Equally that they are so valuable now that they are falling into the hands of collectors rather than lunatics who just like to drive nice cars

My only car has harnesses, if I had more than one car, I'm not sure I'd want it to have harnesses. Whilst they are all awesome cars that you have, are they not all a bit 'samey'?

Beautiful collection Mr Rance, lovely colours too!

One thing I would ask though is how do you decide which one you fancy taking out?

Life for me is (unfortunately wink a lot easier as I have a battered E46 3 series coupe as a daily and the 997.1 GT3 for fun and a BMW X3 for family duties.

The 3 series and GT3 are polar opposites in terms of the way they drive and getting into the 997 GT3 after a week or two in the 3 series is a revelation. If I had the choice of a 996 GT3 RS, a 997.1 GT3 a lotus Elise or a 993 RS/GT2 etc etc I wouldn't know what to do!

Very nice, but too many Porkers for me!

I modify every car i get. We are all different, and cars are compromised for the masses. No harm having cars that suit your desires.

Yep, you are mad. But this is the asylum. What a superb collection.

I find myself rarely driving my 996 on the road mostly because of the visibility. I'm forced to wear the harness every time rather than just the standard seatbelt so as not to risk banging my head against the cage in a collision. So craning forward at junction requires judicious fiddling with the shoulder straps on the move. The wide A pillars on the cage don't help (not sure what you call those girder things with the holes in them, you know what I mean). And then there's the plastic windows going milky with age and the tiny carbon mirrors. Good luck changing lanes - I use the Force. It's probably safer punting it round a track instead.

You do need something cossetting though. That SEC is a good shout. And you need a hot hatch. Something from the 90s perhaps? A good balance between wring-it-by-the-neck analogue agility and everyday usability.

Steve you are a very lucky boy! So many cars there that I would love to have; even called my first daughter Elise but still haven't owned one yet wink
Agree with others, would be a tricky choice presented with that line-up everyday.
Surprised no Caterham or similar. Ever considered an NSX just for a bit of leftfield balance?
Only problem I see here is you teasing us with only one picture. Would be great to them from a few other angles wink
