Porsche 718 Cayman S: PH Videoblog

Dan talks us round the new Porsche 718 Cayman S before taking it along a classic British B-road

So we've got the 'proper' review up too. But while Dan had some time with the Porsche 718 Cayman S he shot a bit of a videoblog thing as well, talking around the car, its options and then going for a bit of a drive in search of the new turbo flat-four's soul...

Oh dear, somebody who's actually driven one questioning the preconceptions of the bells who've already decided it's a bad car (and therefore don't need to drive it), this won't end well

Thanks, Dan, you have made a pretty good case!
Which of those (20k worth of) options do you actually need to get and enjoy the benefits of which you speak?

Actually if you read them properly you will see they are unanimous that the car is as good, or better than the car it replaces, with the exception of the noise it makes which is not as good. I personally found the noise to be different, but still perfectly acceptable to my ears.

Sounds like my OH's 120d. Seems to be trying awfully hard to justify it. My 17 year old BMW 318 will overtake slow moving traffic if driven properly - let's not pretend a 981 can't manage. Don't agree on only being able to access the 981's 'specialness' when in the few top revs - they sound ferocious under normal acceleration conditions. I'm just not convinced any more than I would be by the notion of having a list of reliability statistics pinned to the bedroom wall in my eyeline so I could read it while using an extra-thick condom to trick myself into believing the fact that I can't feel anything is somehow more exciting. It's like Porsche have basically said, "OK, it won't stir your senses, but here are some impressive numbers to read before you set off so you can think about them when you're bored".

I'm never quite sure about Boxster/Cayman drivers who lock their speed-sensitive rear spoiler locked in the "up" position. scratchchin

"Sounds" like a brilliant car. It's been reported in most reviews how keen this engine is to rev and how sharp the throttle response is. Maybe Porsche know what they are doing after all to satisfy the keen driver! Shame about the noise though but I feel that the second hand buyer still has a massive choice of good NA flat-6s for that, so not too bad.

As for the future, Porsche don't make second hand cars, so they are quite rightly not bothered. All good.

Everything I've read/seen about this implies it's a spectacularly good car, but a slightly disappointing sports car (albeit probably still the best mainstream car in its sector).

If Porsche don't care about second-hand buyers, they're idiots... and Porsche are anything but idiots. Residuals and consequent rental costs are enormously important in any automotive market sector but arguably even more so in this than most.

Having said that, I think the second-hand market isn't particularly "driving enthusiast" driven for this sort of car, that's more reserved more for the third/forth/etc. hand market which is probably too far removed from them for them to care overly.
