£100K Garage: Hashim Iqbal
This young PHer has a penchant for German metal and the, er, Perodua Kelisa too
Previously owned: Still on the first one and a half!
Currently owned: 2013 VW Polo Mk5 and half an E36 328i owned with my friend.
On the shortlist: "At 20 I'm still relatively new to driving; however being brought up in a car mad family it was inevitable that I would end up obsessed with anything on four wheels. So on the shortlist is anything that's cool with a good engine."
Mercedes Benz SL600 (R129)
Cost: £7,500
Balance: £92,500
Why I chose it: "Ever since I was a child I remember this car being the new thing and just fell in love with it. It's the extremely smooth lines; I believe that this is the last of the true classics. I have been lucky enough to drive an SL500 of this shape and after driving one it made me fall in love again. With this one being the only R129 SL600 for sale it's not perfect; I'd probably change the wheels at some point and maybe get a navy blue soft top roof."
BMW Alpina B10 V8 (E39)
Cost: £7,500
Balance: £85,000
Why I chose it: "This is arguably one the nicest looking modern BMWs. It's just so perfectly in proportion. I have always loved this shape, so I thought why not go for a special Alpina version? Plus it's dark green, which is one of my favorite ever car colours. I was tempted to go for the E39 M5, which is undeniably another amazing car, but there is something about the prestige and exclusivity of an Alpina that appeals to me very much."
Audi RS4 Avant (B5)
Cost: £12,995
Balance: £72,005
Why I chose it: "I've always been a fan of a fast estate car, especially an Audi fast estate. Audi were the ones in my opinion who made an estate car cool with the RS2. I would love to add one to my garage but due to rising values I thought I'd go for the first RS4 instead. This B5 RS4 would look amazing tearing down the outside lane of the motorway. It's the fantastic lines and the flared arches that make this car look so special. And, of course, the power; it's still quick now, so I can't imagine what it would have felt like back in 2001. I've been lucky enough to be a passenger in one and from that moment I wanted one. I would add all the roof bars and fit my mountain bike to the top it. It would be the perfect way to travel around the country to visit all the forests."
VW Golf GTI Edition 30
Cost: £11,995
Balance: £60,010
Why I chose it: "A real car fan will appreciate a good hot hatch, especially a Golf GTI. After the not so good Mk4, Volkswagen really needed to save the GTI name. The Mk5 was a really great car which all the journalists loved. I've gone for the Edition 30, which I'm hoping will be even better; it certainly looks sharper in my opinion. I've gone for a manual because I feel there really would be no fun in throwing around a hot hatch that requires paddles to change gear."
Lotus Elise S1
Cost: £13,950
Balance: £46,060
Why I chose it: "This is probably up there with one of the purest driving experiences ever. It's just you and the car, with electronics saving you if it goes wrong. With the Lotus there is just a steering wheel and a gear stick - all you need to guarantee an absolute blast on a Sunday morning! Plus this one is dark green with tan coloured seats, which is my favorite colour combination."
Smart ForTwo Brabus
Cost: £8,995
Balance: £37,065
Why I chose it: "Let's not deny that the Smart is a fantastic little city car. Yes, the ride is harsh, but the parking convenience more than makes up for it. It's unfortunate that when you drive a Smart car you get laughed at, so I have gone for the Brabus. This means I will probably get laughed at more for spending extra than needed. The plus side is that it actually is very nippy at low speeds, so it's ideal for me when on the way home out of the city from uni or work."
Alfa GTV Cup
Cost: £11,750
Balance: £25,315
Why I chose it: "A real car person has to own a Alfa Romeo at some in their lives. I have chosen this one as I actually like the look of it. To my eyes the additional equipment of a Cup makes it looks better than a normal GTV. But the main attraction is the V6! The noise an Alfa V6 makes is just fabulous, and can't be matched by any other six-cylinder.
Maserati 3200 GT
Cost: £11,000
Balance: £14,315
Why I chose it: "A Maserati for 11 grand - why wouldn't you? Especially as it's so good looking. This one has a manual gearbox, which is cool since you can't buy a manual Maserati any more. It's almost a supercar for the price of new hatchback. These Maserati V8s sound fantastic as well."
BMW M3 (E46)
Cost: £13,250
Balance: £1,065
Why I chose it: "I really need a six-cylinder BMW that would scare me on a wet roundabout if I approached too fast. I am a big fan of the E46 M3, especially the CSL. However, prices have recently gone ridiculously high, so I will stick to the normal one. Plus this one has a manual gearbox. This car is now two generations old but the figures are still respectable; it looks fantastic sitting on those CSL wheels and it would still give many modern sports cars a run for their money."
Perodua Kelisa
Cost: £990
Balance: £75
Why I chose it: "It's a 'gift' to my friend. Probably the worst car ever made. It just looks horrendous from every angle. To be honest £990 is a little steep but with the leftover cash it would be a nice gesture. I'm sure he will set it on fire or drive it into a wall, but then that would mean less of them on the road!"
I'd have lost the Alpina, the Maserati and the RS4 and bought something newer.
Good choices IMO
One thing I have wondered about the Busso V6, Assuming the nice shiny pipes are the manifold (which they may not be, my knowledge of V engines is pretty poor) how is it that the manifold exits in a line?
