BMW M5 Competition Edition

Say hello to the £100K BMW M5!

The day after we post a review of a £100K Audi RS6 Avant comes news of ... a £100,995 special edition BMW M5. Both will be fast cars off the line; can the new BMW M5 Competition Edition's strictly limited availability prevent it depreciating equally quickly? We live, after all, in an age where early examples of the 560hp F10 M5 are available for little over £25K, while newly registered cars with generous option spends and a couple of hundred miles on the clock go for £10K under the £73,985 list price.

It's a simple black or white decision
It's a simple black or white decision
There's a new M5 on the way of course - we've seen the spy pics already - and this farewell Competition Edition will be limited to just 200 examples worldwide. What makes it worth the premium then?

Well ... it has the 600hp power upgrade seen on the M5 30 Jahre Edition (itself a £113,365 car as driven for our review) and the Competition Package suspension, diff and other upgrades as standard. Like the 30 Jahre it's sub-four to 62mph, hitting the benchmark in 3.9 seconds, or half a second quicker than a standard M5.

To mark it out from those other special editions it gets a full M Performance carbon styling package and interior detailing, a choice of just two colours (Mineral White or Carbon Black), black wheels and a generous trawl through the options sheet up to and including Adaptive LED lights and Bang & Olufsen Advanced audio. The latter, perhaps, the better to hear the notorious speaker-generated engine noise...

£100k?!

This is the sort of car where even if I had millions, I would go for a lightly used example for about £40-50k. I wouldnt even contemplate £100k on one of these especially as a remap can take the standard one to much higher power I believe.

Or even just buy the standard one new and remap/upgrade.

That's not the point though - these specials are supposed to be an investment that costs less than the standard car in the long run.

Super saloon with around 600bhp costs £100k shocker....I'm not sure what the big surprise is, can people please elaborate? It's no different to the RS6. If you want 600bhp from more exotic marques you have to pay more and put up with less practicality.

It's an awful, awful lot of money of course, but I'm not sure why several here are acting really surprised and think it's a joke?

And also.....2nd hand cars cost less than new cars shocker, too.

as well as virtually every option on the list... full leather, comfort seats, LEDs, B&O and competition pack add up to about £17k, plus all the MP carbon fiber bits are a good few grand.

So £17k of it is for more insanely overpriced stuff. Same point remains hehe

No it isn't. It's £30k extra for 40bhp, carbon ceramic brakes, a £5k stereo system, full merino leather including the dash (again, around £5k), adaptive laser headlights etc etc.

Do you forsee these heading the way of a special 911 or dropping like a stone with every other M?

I think the latter, so those other overpriced items are also a ridiculous spend in my book.

But then again, I dont think im the intended buyer of such a car. All I see on this is M for Marketing.

Really? People would put this sort of car in dry storage for 10 years hoping it will appreciate? Wow.

At least with my RS6 you can immediately tell it is not a regular A6. Other than the exhausts, i really struggle with actually differentating it from a normal sporty 5 Series.

I know you can get big discounts on these, but the depreciation is biblical.

ok, so here's the test. When do we see the first £100k Golf?

I'll take a stab at 2030. Anyone care to work out the trends and have a better guess?

(and will this mean that currency has collapsed or our sanity has...)
