Honda 'Sonic Civic' at Comic-Con

Sonic celebrates his quarter-century this year (yes, really!) and Honda pays tribute

What were you doing in 1991? Feel free not to answer if you wish. Some bright spark was creating Sonic the Hedgehog back then, meaning the little guy is now 25 years old. Looks pretty good for it, doesn't he?

To mark this momentous occasion, Honda has created unique Sonic Civic for Comic-Con in America. Well it's one way of getting young people on board with the brand... Sure, this is hardly the biggest automotive news that will grace the internet this week, but it's nice to see Honda still has a sense of humour. And, well, doesn't it look brilliant? In a static appreciation kind of way, probably. Would you want to be seen in it? PH is currently divided...

The Sonic car is based on a Civic Touring Sedan, with one or two modifications. The paint is Candy Sonic Blue (but of course) and Sonic Yellow (including the Honda badge), with the Sonic design in vinyl from Fox Marketing Cars. It wouldn't be Sonic without his red shoes sprinting along to catch gold rings, so that's the purpose the wheels serve. Shame it's front-wheel drive really.

Inside the Civic, which we can't actually see in these pictures, there are two 500-watt subwoofers and two 400-watt amps; because what's a show car without an outrageous sound system? Fortunately they do at least serve a purpose here, with a TV also in the back to allow you to play you-know-what.

Honda says of the concept "we hope that all Sonic fans... rejoice in his all-new ride, as much as we enjoyed creating it." It certainly gets approval from here, though how far that's a reflection on our maturity levels is up for debate. What do you reckon?

It's not going to be to everyone's taste but I was a big sonic fan when I was younger so I do find this quite cool in a retro sort of way. Something a bit different from the norm. Also I think it's a shame we don't get the civic sedan over here. It's quite a nice looking car! Wonder if they put a type R engine in it...

I can't help think Sonic is more deserving of an NSX rather than a Civic!

I do like the way the back wheels are Sonic's feet, while the front are rings though. Nice little touch of design there.

It's a shame they did do it on a FWD car, would have been cool to have it spinning the wheels to get his feet running!
