RE: Brits lead the way in MotoGP: PH2
Monday 22nd August 2016
The athletes in Rio may have been waking up with sore heads and bodies after the most successful Olympics in over a century, but that wasn't the end of the British sporting domination. Over on two wheels at the Czech MotoGP, Cal Crutchlow and John McPhee both stood on top of the podium.
Brits lead the way in MotoGP: PH2
Double top for the Brits in Czech MotoGP
In MotoGP, Cal Crutchlow took an inspired tyre gamble in damp conditions and, where most of the field chose either both soft or a soft front and hard rear wet tyre, Cal opted for hard wets as he correctly predicted that the race would be wet throughout and there wouldn't be a mid-race bike swap. After being well down the field for the first half, Cal stormed up to top spot when the rest of the rider's tyres went off (or fell apart completely in the case of Iannone) and his harder wets came into their own. Jokingly describing the rest of the pack as "a bunch of wimps" for not taking the chance, Cal became the first British top-class winner since Barry Sheene 35 years ago in Sweden.
In Moto3, Scottish rider John McPhee took his Peugeot (which is actually a rebadged Mahindra) to his first GP victory in a soaking wet race after race leader Brad Binder crashed out with five laps to go. This was not only McPhee's first win, it was the first time in 93 years that Peugeot had won a GP. And then, as if the weekend couldn't get any better, Sam Lowes took third spot in Moto2. Medals all around!
Finally, if you haven't already see it, check out Marc Marquez's epic save during practice. What more is there to say about this guy?
