The £15K Jaguar XFR: You Know You Want To

Well if a diesel SUV isn't really your idea of a Jaguar family car, there is another way...

Even before it was confirmed as a pretty damn good car, the Jaguar F-Pace was always going to be popular. The buying public loves an SUV, the Jaguar badge is arguably more appealing than it's ever been and the car looks sharp too. So expect to see plenty over the coming months and years.

Ah yes, about this...
Ah yes, about this...
However, no matter how good the F-Pace is, for some it will be too far removed from the traditional Jaguar remit. It seems certain that a pacier (sorry) version will arrive in time, but what about those who wish to take five people very fast in a Jaguar that isn't an SUV?

There's the XFR, obviously. Believe it or not the original XF flagship was launched seven years ago, meaning genuine bargains are beginning to emerge on the used market. Perhaps a few of the details and the interior will look dated where they didn't in 2009, but 500hp V8 saloons will always be fashionable for us.

Back then the XFR was received extremely well, providing a sharper drive than an Audi RS6 and a better gearbox than the E60 BMW M5. Those cars, plus of course the Mercedes E63, were replaced after the XFR's introduction, but the big Jag continued to offer a compelling range of abilities. It still does a used package in fact, with luxury, performance and great dynamics.

It's cheap, too. This car wasn't chosen solely because it's the most affordable on PistonHeads (honest), but also because it's a good spec and accompanied by a well written advert. When it lists details like recently fitted Michelin Pilot Super Sports and a sports exhaust that can be included, you know you're dealing with an enthusiast. The service history is extensive and it's only being sold to fund a Maserati Quattroporte purchase - top man!

Sure, the miles are higher than average, but this is due to it spending a lot of time on the motorway. Some may prefer silver wheels, which are just a respray away. The leather may be a trickier one to sort for those who don't like it, but it seems like a minor issue given how much is on offer here. And it's £15K!

Yep, 15 thousand pounds. We all know big, fast saloons depreciate, but that is definitely a double-take kind of figure. Alternatives? There's an E60 M5 for similar money, though that will be an older design of car. The V10 RS6 and first W212 E-Class AMG are currently still more expensive.

So there's a lot to recommend this XFR, the owner even going as far as to detail the common faults already addressed that the car is known for. Finally, for something slightly more subtle (and hopefully more spacious), there's this XJ 5.0. Because who wants a diesel 4x4 really? You're spoilt for choice!

JAGUAR XFR
Price:
£15,450
Why you should: Great car, great spec, great price
Why you shouldn't: Might use a lot of fuel? At least the tyres are new...

They are very appealing cars, very much on my current 'next car' list. A British Racing Green one is close to my perfect sports saloon.

That XFR is very nice. I like the interior and, as the article says, silver wheels are just a spray away.

That XJ would be something I'd have an argument with my girlfriend about, if not for the colour.

Both enormously appealing barges but I can't help but feel that both have (potentially quite a lot) further to fall.

De-chrome it and it will look great on the outside, but those seats - deal-breaker for me...

A very handsome and capable beast. I have fond memories hooning around Gaydon touching 170mph on the straight. My father was a serial Jag owner having an S type followed by 2 XF's. Unfortunately he bought his cars new, and the depreciation he lost each time was way more than the asking price of this car.

£15 and a half grand for an 7/8 year old 92,000 mile XF doesn't seem that much of a bargain to me even if it is the R.

According the profile, he lives in London so the superior engine and chassis set up is not a differentiator. It'll never go above 30mph!

Indeed. I wonder if the car has had a suspension refresh yet? Even if it's all motorway miles, it's still a heavy fast car that will have wear and tear on the suspension at this stage of it's life.

Can you swap facelift fronts on to these?

Yes. It's a bit of a mission, but there's a chap on one of the Jag forums who has converted a pre-facelift car (a diesel I think??) to a post facelift XFR-S exterior complete with dhead blue paint like mine. IIRC, the plugs and looms for the lights were different - but I can't remember if that's because he changed from halogen to bi-xenon or if it was because Jaguar revised the looms at facelift.

Surely it would be cheaper to just buy a post-facelift car?

I am sure that would be true. In this chap's particular case, he wanted to look like he had an R-S which at the time was still around a year old or £60k+ so he dressed up his diesel instead. It's not what I would have done, but it did prove that the facelift was indeed possible DIY smile

Who agrees that the pre-facelift XF looks better than the post facelift? The deeper set lights seem to give the original instant recognition whereas the later models' narrow lights seem a bit generic?

I had one of these a few years ago and loved it. Nice and discrete, very quick and typical Jag comfort too. The sat nav was ancient though, even if it was touch screen, but everything worked and I don't recall it ever missing a beat. Can't think of many other 500bhp cars available at this price in this condition and reading the ad, it seems to have had an easy life.

Well I bought one, it's fantastic.

I paid a bit more but got slightly newer with 66k and full Jag warranty.

When they were new the reviews were always positive, as good as the M5 etc, I'm sure they have depreciating to do but I can't see them ever being rock bottom as they're still a capable, reliable, 500+hp car!

I drove the XFR and the M5 back to back, and although the M5 was very exciting this was a lot better road car and probably faster too.
