Griff oil overfill consequences?

Hi everyone,

I checked my oil level on my 94 Griff 500 after a service and it was clearly over the maximum line. I reckon the garage put in between 7 and 7.5 litres.

Since then, I have noticed that my starter sounds like it's wading through treacle when cranking. Could this be a consequence of the overfill?

Also, is that level of overfill potentially damaging to my engine? Would I be advised to drain a bit as soon as I can?

Any thoughts gratefully received.

Many thanks

I would drain some out because as I understand it the reduced space occupied by the oil can cause damage due to increased crankcase pressure. Engines have a full mark on the dipstick for a reason.

Another effect is lobes on crankshaft can then spin in the oil, so it aerates the oil which is not ideal to say the least.

That's a lot!

1/4" = OK

I run mine 1/2 an inch over as advised by Rob at V8D, as I don't have a baffled sump. Never had a problem, the old girl does like to drink a bit of oil when driven flat out for long periods. I did 6 litres in 2 days at the Supercar Event!

Thought so. You would have thought better from as former TVR mechanic. Nothing surprises me any more.
