£100K Garage: Ian Simpson

Over £70K spent on a gorgeous Ferrari for Ian, but there's still enough for an Overfinch Range Rover too...

Name: Ian Simpson
Previously owned: VW Polo, Austin Metro, Classic Mini, Ford Capri 3.0, Honda Civic CRX, Mercedes 230E W123, Lexus IS200 Sport, Seat Leon Cupra, Range Rover (P38) 4.6 Vogue, Citroen Saxo 1.5D, Subaru Impreza Turbo 2000 and probably some others that I've missed.
Currently owned: Citroen C4, Triumph TR6
On the shortlist: Aston Martin DB9, Chevrolet Corvette (C3), Classic Beetle, another Range Rover, one of the new Ford Mustangs (a V8 one), Morgan 3-Wheeler and many, many, more.

Honda CRX
Cost:
£6,500
Balance: £93,500
Why I chose it: "I used to own one and I loved it. A rev-happy little pocket rocket that drove like a go-kart yet with the hatchback it was surprisingly practical as an everyday driver. Mine returned more than 40mpg as well. I know this isn't the VTEC or the SiR, both of which appear in the classifieds; the SiR I don't like the look of and the VTEC I'd prefer less mileage at that price. This low mileage example looks well cared for; if I had the cash I'd have bought it already!"

Overfinch Range Rover
Cost:
£17,995
Balance: £75,505
Why I chose it: "It has a gun cabinet! Actually, I've wanted another Range Rover since I sold my last one, and what better than a Supercharged Overfinch with this colour combination? Off-road ability, crushing performance, luxury and style. And it's got a shotgun cabinet! Middle lane hoggers beware..."

Ferrari F355 Spider
Cost:
£72,495
Balance: £3,010
Why I chose it: "I could have chosen any number of high performance rear-wheel drive cars but the issue is that none of those would be a Ferrari F355, my second favourite Ferrari ever (the £100K budget wouldn't stretch to a 1966 500 Superfast sadly!). This one is convertible with a manual gearbox and right-hand drive. Having previously been of the opinion that all Ferraris should be red, I think this colour combo is fantastic. I will own one one day."

"The remainder would go on a shotgun and upgrades to the brakes of the CRX."

£70k for a 355 seems quite reasonable in this age of ferocious Ferrari prices.

Ferrari is lovely but that Range Rover is ghastly. Nothing worse than a chavved RR. I'd take a standard one all day long

Always liked the CRX. 355 is lovely, but these days I just feel the 348 is even more lovely

RR wouldn't do it for me necessarily though. Out of interest, what sort of price are classic RR Overfinches running at these days? Recall one for sale at a specialist a couple of years ago for high £30ks

Good shout OP! Anyone who chooses a 500 super fast (my dream car too) wins in my book. Still don't like the new style PH, but this guy nailed it in the face.

I was daydreaming about the black LHD GTS that went through Silverstone Auctions recently. It didn't meet it's reserve of £45k.

I'll start daydreaming that values are going down now!

It's the noise, for me. There's a few videos kicking about of F355's with Capristo exhausts - a recent one on Matt Farah's channel, and the noise is epic, epic, epic. No later V8 fezza sounds more F1 like. An F355 with an open gate is a sensible, and enjoyable investment, even at 70k. Better at 45 though.
