The launch of a new five-cylinder performance model was never going to be a small affair for Audi, what with all the offbeat, warbly motorsport heritage it has. How better to make people love the TT RS than with videos of Walter Rohrl strutting his stuff and wheeling out an old race car or two? Yes, on static display alongside the new TT at Jarama were an RS2, both road and rally versions of the Sport Quattro plus this incredible 90 IMSA GTO. Predictably the crowds of eager journalists were drawn to it even faster than the free Wi-Fi and burgers, this car's appearance and reputation always guaranteeing a reception.

Because even in the company of a Group B rally car, the IMSA looks wild. It's so wide and so aggressive, the car bulging beneath the glasshouse like it's trying to escape itself. That it remains one of the most powerful touring cars ever built only adds to the allure. Accordingly here's the 90 IMSA GTO, basking in the Madrid sunshine and demanding a place on your desktop. Do you want to argue with it?

That exhaust makes for a hot cabin in the Summer, but an excellent cabin "heater" in Winter ....





Heavyish five pot lump mounted quite far forward and 4WD calls for some clever thinking when it comes to weight distribution, alternator and PAS pump driven from the differential :

There's a 100% replica of the IMSA car races in historic touring cars in Germany. It sounds like 5-cylinder thunder and goes like a scalded cat - awesome.
