No luck for Guy in Bonneville

Damp weather stalls Triumph's 400mph attempt

A crash during a high speed run has seen Triumph and Guy Martin's bid to break the FIM Land Speed record fail, much to the disappointment of everyone involved. Despite having set a speed of 245.667mph in August, which made the Infor Rocket Streamliner the fastest Triumph ever, the record attempt last week was hampered by bad luck and tricky conditions as Bonneville's salt refused to play ball.

Having completed a few 'steady' test runs and recorded a speed of near to 200mph, the streamliner was briefly put out of action when it fell over whilst being towed to the start line. Having checked it for damage, the team then attempted a record run only for the rear wheel to hit a patch of damp salt, causing Guy to lose control and crash. As this accident happened at a higher speed, the team decided to cancel the bid as they needed to return to base and thoroughly check the streamliner over for damage. When you are attempting to hit 400mph, safety is always a priority.

According to Triumph, "Guy was making good power in mile one when the Triumph Infor Rocket Streamliner lost traction on a damp section of the salt surface, causing the rear of the machine to step out of line and the streamliner to go down on the course. Guy was completely uninjured in the incident, however the streamliner will now require a full inspection before any further runs can take place."

What next? Triumph is still dead set on taking the record, however the window for it happening at Bonneville may well be shut for this year. The only comment on Triumph's website about future plans is "we'll keep you updated with the next phase..." On the bright side, at least Guy has a 160mph Transit van to keep him amused in the mean time...

Why the need to put it on the homepage. It's not been televised yet and now we all know the result.

Because it's news?

That's a bit like saying "I wanted to watch the documentary on 9/11 but I already know the towers fell down".

I'm sorry for Guy and the team. I'm sure they gave it 100%.

Why do people think that the whole world should avoid posting, discussing, commenting on "the result" just because they're not seen the match/race/news/documentary?

If YOU don’t want to know "the result" then it’s YOUR job to "look away now"! The rest of us are happy to live in the "now" rather than in some form of time slip to suit you.

Ahh right, cool, I'll start posting who won the MotoGP/F1 results as thread title then as soon as the chequered flag drops, see how many share that view...

I would've thought:
"Guy Martin Record Attempt update (spoiler alert)"

no it's not...that would be the same as "I wanted to watch the Guy Martin episode about the record attempt, but I already knew he'd failed"
Which some of didn't know... until we saw the title of the article...

The MotoGP/F1 results will be all over the news and mainstream social media platforms the minute the chequered flag drops, so it's no different than moaning about it appearing on your FB/Twitter feed before you've had the chance to watch the recording/highlights.

Don't want to know about it live? Stay away from likely places you'll read about it, genius.

yet we still don't see results posted as thread titles on PH straight after the race scratchchin
It could just be that geniuseses are able to avoid the TV news and websites that announce such stuff, yet safely surf their favourite haunt safe in the knowledge, to date, VERY few dheads do such a thing....

Its been announced on the BBC news tonight. Surely they are not really going to do a whole TV program about a failed attempt when we know the outcome, can it and find something else to fill the slot. There must be plenty of other daft ideas for him to get up to wink

I for one was avoiding the Guy Martin thread. However i could not help but see the fking thread title.
I assume you were avoiding all other motorcycle publications and websites and mainstream news until it was aired (which I don't think was anytime soon) too?

You missed the bit where it ran over 245mph? The "near 200mph" runs were immediately pre-crash, I'd imagine they mean. Not too many 'supercars' can top 245mph (ignoring all the other obvious differences).

I'd love to see how the attempt went. Regardless of the outcome, I'd like to see how the thing was put together and how it was developed and organised.

But that's a car.

If you really want to rub salt into the wound you could mention that in this year's Bol d'Or the bikes (which are the normal £15k things you can buy at the shop plus a bit of tuning) were hitting 205 to 210mph on the slightly longer than normal straight at Paul Ricard. I think the fastest ones were 215/216mph. They were doing this every 2 mins for 24 hours.

All credit to Triumph though. One off bespoke thing running on something I put on my chips. Loads of publicity and bloke from IT who does a direct access course and buys a Street Triple might have been influenced more by this than the hardcore racey lot who already know what they want.

I'm surprised they waited until now to run. I was involved with a team at Bonneville running one of my cars out there at the recent USFRA World of Speed and the last day of that four day event was cancelled due to overnight rain making the salt soft and slushy. Too dangerous to run, so everyone packed up and went home and then I noted the Triumph team turned up two days later. That didn't make sense to me when they could have done it in an organised event with all the support etc.

confused

Thing is that I get annoyed if someone posts the result to the day before's MotoGP, BSB etc. But trying to avoid the result of a land speed record attempt that's being reported on even mainstream media (it was on the news!) whilst waiting for a TV documentry that hasn't even been made seems a little extreme to me.

You would literally have to avoid every news outlet. And then you wouldn't find out when the show's on, so you'd never know hehe

Why does everyone seemingly line up to polish Guy Martin's knob? It is some big practical joke or something?

He seems to never actually win a TT race despite being the poster child, 'hates' being on TV but always seems to be doing TV show, and acts like a brat when things don't go to his liking?

I just don't get it? confused

That's because this thread came out within about 3 hours of the crash happening.

Add 3 months. Still feeling lucky, punk?
