Servicing Intervals
Discussion
I have my 4th year service coming up next month (my first service was after 9 months as I'd covered 10k miles, but the ones after that have been at 12 monthly intervals as I've done less than 10k p.a. since - my car has done approx. 25k miles now)
Car qualifies for the fixed service price plan, which means £761 for a V12
I don't need pollen and air filters, which are recommended every 20k miles, as they were done 2 services ago at c. 18k miles
However it's been suggested I need gearbox oil change (£125) and differential oil change (£75). Thoughts ? Knowledge ? Official recommendations ?
The plan on the website doesn't seem to cater for manual gearbox V12s, possibly because so few will qualify (post November 2012 cars only)
The website mentions automatic differential oil at 40k miles, but presumably that means cars with an automatic gearbox ? or am I misunderstanding ?

It seems there was a small mistake - speedo was still in kms and they thought I'd done 40k miles
Assume at 40k miles, certain gearbox oils need changing
Jon - the fixed price servicing costs are not bad IMO, for a car in this bracket, albeit as is very well documented on here, you can supply your own oil and make a decent saving. But yes, your dealer is correct, there are loads of numbered notes next to the fixed prices advising of additional items than need replacing, at additional cost, every x miles
IIRC, DB11 was to have a servicing plan included - was it 5 yrs ? To work a little like the Ferrari 7 year plan. I understand those plans really are fully inclusive of all fluids/filters/etc so you just need to pay for consumables like tyres & brake pads/discs
Did that servicing plan get launched with DB11 ? If so, that's probably the best part of £5k of costs over 5 years. Of course it keeps you going back to the official dealer so more chance you will use them for the likes of tyres, MOT, pads, etc rather than going to an indi.
These things are always (to my knowledge) transferable with the cars

The auto trans needs diff oil change, yes, which is separate to the actual auto trans fluid change. Your gearbox needs its actual gear oil renewing, there is about a litre and a half more 6 speed manual trans oil required than auto trans diff oil. Both have a simple drain plug and fill plug, meaning that all you should pay extra is the additional price of oil @ circa £30 by my reckoning - but a straightforward substitute seems fine to me in grand scheme of things.
I'm not too sure about the prescribed consumable approach you mention though. For instance if air filters are not on list the wheel arch liners are unlikely to be removed to gain access to air box to do the inspection side of service and examine state of air filters regardless of changing them. That is essential to understand breather circuit status. A prescribed approach is not always the best care approach imho and episodes like CraigV12V failure often have route cause waiting to be picked up in a careful inspection, which doesn't always happen if the service is just a prescribed list of parts.

Jonby, my air filters after 6000 miles in 12m - bit aghast really as they are a '2 year' item and I have done no ploughing or field work with the car!
The pragmatic, condition based engineering approach as practiced by certain indies may be best. Especially those that bring you dirty filters to see rather than copies of GQ

They certainly look grubby, and also appear to contain particles.
Could it be possible, that they were not actually changed last time, even though invoiced?
