Hi Guys,

soon to be an owner of a V8 Vantage (09) Sport-shift 28000 miles Tungsten silver

Having test driven both manual and Sport-shift, I opted for sport shift as the driving experience was much more enjoyable.

I do understand it is driving a manual without a clutch pedal and really enjoyed the drive once i'd understood the paddles are a must use and how to shift smoothly.

My questions relate to trying to ensure longeivity (as much as possible) for the clutch:

1. When in traffic, I know the crawl feature is similar to slipping the clutch in manual (until it hits 6mph when the clutch is fully engaged).

- So is it best when in crawling traffic to avoid moving forward slowly with the cars, instead wait until there is a gap, speed up to close the gap and come to a halt?

- Does this mean when slowing to a halt and coming anywhere below 6mph the clutch is beginning to disengage and slip until the full halt?

2. I am right in saying i should avoid reversing up gradients or with full lock (e.g. around corners) to avoid clutch wear due to the high gearing?

3. How best to move off when I release the break pedal, let it crawl to 6mph / add a little gas (until the clutch is fully engaged) and then begin to give more throttle to my desired acceleration (i.e. avoiding big launches)?

4. I have heard that 1 click on the handbrake disables the crawl feature, is this correct?

Thanks for the help

Seems you have your terms engaging/disengaging backwards....confusing.

1. Yes. When coming to a definite halt, either select 1st gear before the car would normally do so, or for a prolonged stop, select neutral as you're slowing down.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.
4. Wouldn't know, but as soon as you apply any throttle, crawl is disengaged.

Hi
I have an 09 Vantage SS.
I tend to change to neutral and wait for a gap in traffic. Crawl has the feeling of moving me quickly towards the car in front. Neutral (pull back both paddles to engage) lets me roll up to the back of the car ahead.
Received wisdom is, if avoidable, dont reverse up an incline. Many stories on here of a burning smell coming from the clutch. It also seems to be a "quick" reverse which I dont find easily controllable.
I've never heard of the handbrake click diasbling the crawl mode and would be interested if this is more than an urban myth.
Enjoy the car - its a billiant piece of machinery and people seem drawn to the car (in a good way) and are genuinely pleasant and engaging.

Hi just to confirm that yes one click on the handbrake does disable crawl. In traffic I tend to drop it into neutral by pulling both up and down shift paddle shift levers together and then roll up to traffic in front.
However, having owned mine for 3 years MY10 so ASM ii I opted recently for a dual plate clutch upgrade and large improvements all round.
PS ; Another tip is always do a clutch learn from cold each time as that seems to be a good idea based on various feedback and supplying dealer etc
Enjoy the car and the entire AM experience

can you select neutral when the car is still moving? i.e. when coming to a rolling stop, or does it have to be stopped to select?

thanks for all the input so far guys!

And I also wondered if you can select first gear while on the go in neutral, or do you have to stop before selecting a gear?
I have SportshiftIII.

Yes, Neutral can be selected while car is still moving.

Can't comment not the Sportshift III, but can be done on SSI. But don't try it at too higher speed. I imagine it the same as trying to whack a 'traditional' manual into 1st at 40mph it's just going to be the gnashing of teeth.

My V8VS is just about to go into BR for Twin plate & lightened flywheel, do you still need to do clutch learns with the upgrade?

I've had the upgrade and do a clutch learn every time from cold, but be worth asking the guys at BR when yours is in for the definitive answer as would also be interested. I'm working on the basis that it cant hurt to do it as it only takes seconds anyway

The crawl mode - should the car move away when in 1st like an automatic?
