Hi All,

I've been running Continental ContiSportContact 5s on my last and also my current car for a few years now, but I read a lot about how good Michelin are. As I will be needing to change my fronts soon I'm toying with changing all four and changing to Michelin Pilot Sport 4. Both seem to get great reviews, and to be honest I'm not particularly disappointed with the Contis, but I would be keen to hear of anyone's direct experiences of both? Does anyone have a clear preference having used both?

Many thanks in advance!

Don't know if this helps as I'm a generation out...

Just gone from SC3's & SC5's to PS3's and have been impressed

They ride just as well, front end grip seems to be better and they all still look new (only 2k miles admittedly)

I have PS4s on my E46. Love them. Grip well when wet, really well in the dry. They have worn very well over the 15k I've had them on, and aren't all that loud or bad for fuel economy. Much better than the Pilot Sport 3s I had on a Golf prior to this.

The only complaint I have is that the tread pattern doesn't look as cool as the original Pilot Sports.

I've had various Conti Sport Contacts over the years, while they grip well I've never really been impressed with their longevity. Strangely I've never bought Michelins, probably as they're too expensive... however if they provide extra longevity then they'd be worth the investment.

Funny you should mention that, on my last car (MkIV Mondeo) I did think they wore rather quickly, but I put this down to the car weighing a lot and my enjoyment of a 'spirited' drive. I've used Contis for so long that I'd kind of got used to it. Looking on BlackCircles the Michelins are about a tenner more each, so not bad if they do last longer.

I've got Contisport 6 on my car and they seem quiet good. Worth a look.

Had Conti SC3's/SC5's on the M3, Chimaera and 130i for a total of about 80k miles.

Changed to PS4's 5000 miles ago on the 130 and they are by far the best tyre I've ever used. Dry grip and handling is excellent, in the wet they are freakishly good.

Got half the money stashed away this month so hopefully order some next month.

I get too excited about stuff like this smile

Just to follow this up, but I got a set of four Michelin Pilot Sport 4s fitted yesterday. Even accounting for new rubber all round I'm thrilled to bits with them. I'll be interested to see how long they last and how they fair in the wet!

Thanks for all the comments!

Michelin are launching an S version of the PS4 in January (that will be the replacement for the MPSS) I expect that will come in M3 sizes.

I've been a huge fan of the Goodyear Eagle F1 for a long time - predictable and incredibly easy to judge breakaway in the wet.

I put ContiSport Contact 5's on my Golf V6 4Motion and they have been really stable, very confidence inspiring and generally done an honourable job.

I've put a set of MPS4 on the back of my S2000 (I will be matching the fronts shortly) and my word, it's on a different plane of grip!

I'll be fitting MPS4 to the Golf next. They might be a bit more expensive, but make no mistake, they're easily that much better.

Incredible tyre. I might even buy Michelin's cold weather tyre too for the Golf.

The extra expense seems to be offset against the longer life wink

Just put 4 Eagle F1 Assymetric 3 on the 535d - both rear PSS shot after 12 months due to punctures. Never had a puncture on it before in 5 yrs and has always been on Eagle F1 Assymetroic 2's (still was on front).

It feels a bit soggy and wallow-y. Pressures are good (they rarely put enough in - its 46 at the back - honest!). Assymetric 3 Tyres made in Poland. Judgment reserved but, despite the full tread depth it just feels looser and softer.

Has anyone used the PS4 on a track? I track my car maybe 3 times per year and once ran Nankang NS-2Rs on the street which are a dedicated track day tire that happens to be road legal and grip was nice but the ride quality was hard as a rock and they were so noisy so I don't want to do that again. Prior to this, I ran Michelin PSS which was really nice on the road but overheated in about 3 laps on the track and had the softest sidewalls aside from the Goodyear Eagle F1s so I was not a huge fan.

Just looking for an amazing street tire (most importantly not too hard or loud) that can also hold up on a track for at least 8-10 laps at a time, but perhaps that doesn't really exist.
