In NL driving lessons / test, the door is to be opened with the arm furthest away from the door

In doing so, this pretty much causes one to look back naturally and notice oncoming cyclists / similar.

And it gives you more leverage when the wind catches the door. Try holding the door shut with your near arm against a wind gust.

My last appearance in a work's accident book was when a van door caught the wind (wasn't long after they started naming storms over here) lt blew open with me hanging on to it and deposited me on my arse in the middle of the road. Am not a powerfully built director but not that weak either.

Simple, but brilliant. Someone opened the door on me yesterday while cycling, whats shocking is that the door opened into a bus lane and it was the rear door (passenger getting out at traffic lights), I was riding on the white line as the lane is so full of holes and cracks and this person did not even check for anything, could have been a bus, instead I saw it and tut tutted.

You know what? I passed my driving test in Holland in 1992 and I have never, ever, given it thought on how I open the door, but now I've read about it, I feel uber conscious about it.

And yes, I do open it 'the Dutch way' smile
