hopefully the right place to put this...

I've just my renewal through from Footman James to cover 5 cars - it's gone up 25% since last year so obviously going to look at alternatives! I've not made any claims, but looks like they have changed the underwritter.

before I ring around all the usual suspects, i thought it was best to ask for recommendations / try to rule out those that wont be competitive as I find you have to go through the whole process with each insurer or broker before they will give any kind of indicative (even ball park) quote. I'd like to get down to a short list of 2 or 3 to run a full quote through with.

so, can anyone recommend a broker or ins who can cover:
- 5 cars, some modified.
- central london address (gated private carpark, but not garaged)
- unlimited mileage across the cars
- class 1 business use
- trackday cover (currently limited to 3 days a year)
- agreed value
- salvage rights
- European cover

happy to hear from any PH brokers who might be able to help too.

I've had a few cars with Pace Ward http://www.paceward.com/ for a number of years now and always find them to be competitive. They offer a personal service and will tailor policies to your needs. They will provide track cover but it is not included in the policy.

I find renewals always come in more expensive in the absence of an alternative quote. Brokers you used the year before are not incentivised to lower your premium.
I always shop around using 2/3 brokers. I changed multi car policy form chubb last year to hiscox as hiscox was 30% cheaper for similar cover. This years renewal with the same broker was slightly higher and my broker swore that would be the best price. I went to my old broker and found that chubb would now insure me for 30% less than what my current hiscox renewal!

I have four cars with Manning at https://manninguk.com. I can't say if they are the cheapest but they do offer all the options you list, including bundled track day cover which has saved me a fortune over the last two years.

Also been with Pace Ward for a few years, and found them competitive - although my requirements are less than the OP.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I think I tried pace-ward a couple of years ago and they wouldn't cover (either competitively, or at all) high value cars which were not garaged. will check again. Manning, Hiscox and Chubb seem to get mentioned a lot, so those 4 look like a reasonable place to start. hopefully we can get to a ballpark number without hours on the phone going through all the details!

is it worth trying adrian flux etc?

in terms of 'quality' of cover, as long as any repair work is factory recommended / authorised and windscreens are covered, I'm not bothered about 'extras' such as like-for-like car replacement, breakdown cover, travel insurance etc.

Go to Quantum plc and ask for a Chubb Masterpiece policy.

Gives fully comp on any vehicle and anyone to drive your fleet. Agreed value on all cars.

Very good policy but if OP's criteria is cost then unlikely to be a viable option ... they were 4x more expensive than the insurer I eventually went with !

I am with chubb masterpiece too and they were cheaper than hiscox this year as stated above.
Last year they quoted me more for 1 of the 3 cars than the whole premium for all 3 cars this year!

Correctly called me out as a cheapskate ;-) in all seriousness, I might add them to the list - the renewal is high, but not unpalatable, allowing other people to drive my cars would be quite handy, although I've added named drivers to the current policy for just the cost of the admin fee in the past - seems everyone else is a lower policy risk than me! so if they are similar to footman or even slightly more expensive I might consider it.

I know I will get shot down in flames, but Admiral multi-car have always looked after me. They insure 11 cars of mine. they always come in with a dramatic increase, but each year I call up and they bring the premiums back down. I don't think they do track insurance, but then you can always get separate day insurance for that.

I think they have problems with modified cars and I dont think we would quote be on unlimited mileage for the expensive stuff, but might be worth a try.

I cover my fleet (see profile, garage) of 16 cars with First Point. The policy is currently with Zurich. The fleet goes from a 1930 Model A to an R1 engined track car to three Ferraris, 2 Porsches and a Ginetta race car with a load of classics in between and 2 daily Mercs so they can accommodate variety.

Its a premium policy with agreed value on all cars without the need to send a load of photos etc and a personal service with no switchboard shenanigans.

Sky Insurance were good for me for a couple of years. Then jumped last time out...worth a try though - http://www.skyinsurance.co.uk/

Am currently with old favourites from when I only had my Caterham MSM - http://www.msminsurance.co.uk/. Very friendly, very competitive.

Aon were the ones I used prior to both the above, but they couldn't cover all the cars so I ended up with a split policy.

I'm with Zurich via Nowell & Richards. Call them and ask for Karren Perrins who'll look after you well.

Try Lockton. Although main claim to fame is Aston Owners Club insurance, they have been very good with other makes too. Excellent service, can insure cars at valuation not just book and they have an excellent record of dealing with claims if an unhappy day comes along.

Can you use your own choice of repairer or are you limited to their mate Marko in a lock up?

shopped around with all the above for my 2 weekend cars, and the best I could get was with the Locktons through the club schemes.

What was shocking was the little difference between premiums with a £100k difference in the value of the 2 cars, and also how much the 2 cars had increased in value in the last year again!

Absolutely right!! I think every couple of years it is worth a complete review. I was with Locktons (insurer Chubb) and my premium started upwards after three years with Locktons. Then I moved to Footman James and received a 25% reduction with guess who - Chubb!!!!. I will have another thorough look this year when it is premium time again. I tried Adrian Flux and they never called me back so i may give them a miss - but there are one or two on this thread that I was not aware of and I will try them this year.
