Subaru Forester STI: PH Fleet

The Forester finally finds its voice

From the day I first test drove the Forester I was thinking - and saying - "love it, just needs a bit more burble" and, finally, a year into ownership I've sorted it. We'll get to the fun stuff shortly. First the painful bit...

Remember I left you last time anticipating a cheaper service bill? Didn't quite work out that way and in the end it just tipped into four figures. Should have remembered this from my previous stint as a Subaru owner - lovely cars but spannering never seems to come cheap. I don't begrudge it though; new discs and pads all round for a Brembo set-up - plus braided lines to improve the pedal feel while they were at it - was never going to be cheap and I knew from the start the brakes needed an overhaul.

The guys at Richard Henry Motorsports struggled to source Brembo discs and pads for the rear so I've got Pagids on there instead; no great shakes and the pedal now feels nice and firm as it should. In addition they did a general fluids and filters service, replacing a front anti-roll bar drop link along the way and sorting the faulty speedo converter that was putting the car into limp mode above 3,750rpm.

With insurance renewal too it's been an expensive month, Adrian Flux malleable enough to trim the bottom line back to the same as last year having blamed an initial 15 per cent hike on the increase in insurance premium tax. It spared the odious task of ringing round and I think both parties can come away from that phone call satisfied with the outcome.

Enough about that though. I want to tell you about my new exhaust! Now I had to tread carefully here because Mrs Trent uses the Forester as the daily runaround and very much didn't want it making any more noise than it did as stock. Fair enough but even STI's OE system strangled the sound too much for my tastes and I wanted my Subaru to sound like a Subaru. I wasn't after full-on chavtastic chugga-chugga, just a bit more burble.

I got a tip-off Litchfield were selling off a load of Subaru stock but sadly missed the boat on any of the Milltek stuff they used to do. Then I remembered from back in the day that Hayward & Scott stuff was always well rated, looked pretty stock and was on the subtle side in terms of noise. They do a full three-inch system but I wanted to keep my standard look and opted for a 2.5-inch backbox for starters; not cheap at £276 but you get what you pay for and the guys at Richard Henry were impressed at how well it fitted compared with some of the bodged cheapo systems some people go for. It sticks out from the bumper a little more but isn't too bazooka-like in diameter and should dull down a bit with a few miles. Which will be good because, as yet, there have been no domestic rumblings. In fact, I'm not sure she's even noticed.

This is good and exactly as advertised by Hayward & Scott: "Subtle in terms of looks and sound, friendly on the motorways and growls at playtime." From the inside there's just a hint of additional bass to tickle your tummy but from the outside it sounds like a proper boxer four, that distinctive throb present and correct without being intrusive or anti-social. But what do I know; I just spent nine months with a Range Rover Sport SVR and fear my threshold for exhaust noise may have been permanently skewed. I put together a little before and after noise test video clip you can see below and judge for yourself.

I'm chuffed to bits though. But can't help noticing the claimed 18hp increase if I go for the 2.5-inch centre section too. Wonder if I can get away with that?

Thanks in a large part to your earlier articles, I went to look at an STi Forrester like yours... nice, but I didn't fit too well (6'4", natch).
Accidentally bought a Mk4 Legacy GT Spec B instead while I was there though, at 33% above my absolute max budget wink

It's rather more refined than the STi Forrester but very much as quick I feel; mine came with the factory-fit STi Genome back boxes. They are very much bazooka sized! Sadly, with the twinscroll turbo what you gain in smooth torque and lack of lag lower down, you lose in the burble, as it has equal length headers. But the Genomes do make up for that a bit wink

Surely it needs a remap if you change the rest of the exhaust.

He sounds very happy smile

But of course yes, the more boxes you take out, the better it breathes, and quite noticeable too when they're all gone smile

And yes, a re-map. When I had mine done for the first time it was dett'ing badly - couldn't hear/feel anything though

I had the faulty speedo and associated limp mode on my old blobeye WRX.

Turned into a bit of a nightmare, the drive was OK - turned out the plastic cog in the gearbox it runs off had stripped its teeth! That was a stupidly expensive amount of labour for a £1.50 part.

Boxer 4 burble? 😒

One short header and one long header means the exhaust pulses arrive out of phase.

'Boxer 4' engine sounds just like any other 4.

Maybe we should say Subaru burble instead 😊

I used Andy Forrest for my Impreza WRX and would definitely recommend, excellent results. But he'd be a long trip for most people.

I was lucky to get in on the Litchfield sell off. Full 3" Miltek with sportcat. Fudge me! Mapped by Duncan at Race Dynamics.

It is a little loud and not as subtle as it used to be, does make a nice noise and only really a pain in that I can't hear the kids in the back.

nono Stop that, you'll get me into serious trouble! Had successfully told myself a little extra burble was sufficient. But when you put it like that....

did the discs, pads and had the wheels repowered on mine last month too. have full Prodrive sports cat and system with Bob Rawle re-map. just a little higher on the bhp than above ( 332 bhp @ 5084 rpm and 398 lb-ft @ 3645 rpm ). well worth doing. transforms the car.

Big subaru fan. Love the noise, but appreciate you may cause problems with others, eg neighbours, BiB, etc.

You're on a slippery slope Dan. Its all too easy to do "a little here, a little there". Before you know it...

I will tell you this though, in case its any consolation. I went from a modified 22B, back to stock (many thanks to Paul Blamire at Zen Performance a few years ago now), and while it wasn't as quick, it turns out the standard car is a nice place to be.

Dan, you've fitted the same backbox as I have. In addition I have a Cosworth air filter. Those together were enough for Bob Rawle to extract 342bhp... Just think of the improved reliability of a custom live map. How could your Mrs. argue with that? (seriously, it pulls like a bloody train. The way it hauls to 110 leptons in 4th is just rude).

Good work Dan! I recently had to have the centre box on mine replaced because it had split, was considering retooling the whole thing with Hayward & Scott, but Milltek managed to find me a replacement part. Mine is a Litchfield and is also running about 320 BHP. seems like that's about the sweet spot on them. smile

Have you done the snorkel delete yet? That is free and will give you a bit more intake noise, plus arguably a freer flowing intake.
