£100K Garage: Jack McDermott

A strong British theme for this latest £100K fantasy garage!

Name: Jack McDermott
Previously owned: Fiat Seicento
Currently owned: Alfa Romeo MiTo, Tiger Racing Cat E1
On the shortlist: " I'm doing this assuming that I get to keep my Tiger because it's hard to find another that I like as much! I paid £4,500 for it so that'll come off the total. But on the shortlist is either a Cayman or an Evora, certainly. Then something a bit less sporty, better for long distances, maybe a Vantage or an F-Type. A little Mini of some kind also, and something with AWD."

Lotus Evora
Cost: £29,990
Balance: £70,010
Why I chose it: "I went away one weekend a while back, and parked on the holiday site was a stunning blue Evora - I have wanted one ever since! I can just imagine driving it across the Llandegla Moors on a sunny day. I went for this red one as something about it stood out; for me, it was between this one and a blue one, but not having seen one in red before I do really like it. Has to be a manual as it's about enjoyment for me, not who's fastest through the gears."

Mini Cooper S
Cost
: £4,100
Balance: £65,910
Why I chose it: "My dad owns a Mini One but whoever owned it before seems to have ticked every JCW box they could! It feels like such a nice car to drive (having only been driven in it and moved it about on the drive) as everything feels much more connected than it does in my Mito. The Mini just seems like it wants more power, hence opting for the Cooper S. I'd drive it to work down the back roads with a smile on my face, as it should be brilliant fun. I went for the older one as I think I'd prefer the supercharged one to the turbo one, simple as that!"

Land Rover Discovery 4
Cost: £20,645
Balance: £45,265
Why I chose it: "The rules say you need something AWD! I thought about an AWD F-Type or an Audi R8 but, let's face it, a 2+2 sports car and what should be called a 2+2 hatch aren't going to carry much stuff! So I've used the AWD choice to pick something sensible. I thought about a Quattro estate, but I feel Audis age really quickly. The Disco 4 fits the bill and I've always had an odd soft spot for them though they are not my normal type of car. This one is in a nice grey with a decent engine and nice wheels, plus the auto may be a nice change. There's not a lot of benefit with a manual on a car like this, in my opinion. Sorted."

Jaguar F-Type V6
Cost: £39,750
Balance: £5,515
Why I chose it: "They're simply gorgeous. As I said on the shortlist, I wanted something like an Aston or an F-Type. You'd be looking at similar money for an early V8 Vantage but I think that this is a better choice as it's a lot more modern. I'd go for weekends away and whatnot in this; it'll make the motorway journey to Manchester most weekends easy, and I just love the noise they make. I went for this one as it has the nice wheels, looks good in red and, I'll be honest, seems pretty well priced. It's a hard choice between the manual and the auto, but when you drive something with an old gearbox and a heavy clutch (like the Tiger), anything modern is pretty comfortable! Plus, I just love a good manual gearbox."

Tiger Racing Cat E1
Cost
: £4,500
Balance: £1,015
Why I chose it: "Well, I do already own this car and I can assure you it's loads of fun! It has a 2.0-litre Pinto engine, twin 40 Dellortos carbs, a fast road cam, a Type 9 gearbox, Sierra front hubs and rear sub frame. It has fully adjustable Spax coilovers with inboard front brakes and rear Sierra brakes. I chose this car because I just love the way it looks. I've redone the interior with new carpet and a new padded suede tunnel top, plus it now has an electronic ignition rather than the points and condenser, which were forever going wrong.

It's not the quickest thing on the road, but it doesn't matter! It's about the fun you have, and the fact I can wring its neck before reaching dangerous speeds probably means I enjoy it more. The thousand quid change will probably end up being spent on this - new engine anyone?"

Only one remark: Ditch the F-type and upgrade to an Evora S (SR). No point in having both imo.

Not much of an upgrade IMO. I've owned both and prefer NA

I like the that garage.

I don't think there is much similarity between an F-type and an Evora - other than both being beautiful.
They certainly don't share many similarities in how they feel and drive.

Also hadn't realised Disco4 was that kind of money, they're a terrific car if you need space and refinement.

Interesting. How is the jag drive so different? I would have thought they are a very similar market - gt / sports typ cars and look similar to me!

Having re-read through this, I'll have to apologize for the terrible spelling and grammar, it was a late night when I was writing it, honest typewobble

It should be against the rules to use your own car in the dream garage!

It is as far as I understand it, I'm certain it was during the first iteration anyway.

Ive only spent a few days in a V6S Jag and about 2 months with a V8 (both autos). The V8 is utterly dominated by the engine, it influences everything about how the car drives and feels (It's a muscle car / very fast sporting GT). It doesn't feel accurate or lithe, but big and brutal - which in its way is terrific. The V6 is less dominated by the engine and is a little more tactile because of it but I still think its bulk really compromises its sports car feel. The Evora on the other hand I feel hides its mass and feels small and agile, its much more towards the sports end of the GT category (mine is a manual which also will have an impact). Down side of the Evora is a relatively characterless engine but I think the V6 F-type suffers with this also.

All just my opinion of course and I'm sure others would reach a different opinion.... But I would have both and use them quite differently.

Hmmmmmm, fair enough. He posted a v6 jag, not a v8. I would use a v6 evora for road trips, same for the jag....

Evora is perhaps better all round as it's better for track work

I don't remember reading that in the rules? But when you already own one of the cars in your dream garage then why not? I took it off the 100k. Plus I spent ages looking for something similar that I liked as much and couldn't find anything

I think it's fair play as the arbitrary rules forced you to buy a Disco, which - it didn't seem - would otherwise feature in your 'dream garage' (and at least you took the money off).

No st!
Because it's a forum and I am free to comment on the choices made. If there was no discussion to be had on the story it would simply be a news article.

I didn't spend so long in the V6S jag and they've all been autos that I've driven (my Evora is a manual). I'd say the Jag is more relaxing although the ride isn't as good. And I still think a V6 F-type is a big heavy tool compared to the Evora. Being totally honest, I'd rather an F-type for ploughing through traffic, and the Evora for everything else.

Ultimately, you are right though, both will do both jobs, I just think their strengths make them quite different.
