Heading to New York for first time end of January, I'm there for a full week. Staying in the Wellington Hotel (already been advised the hotel is very dated, but way I see it as its just somwhere to sleep) So where is decent wise to eat at?

Loads of great places, my favourite from the last week was the Excellent Dumpling House in Chinatown, just off the Main Street.

No frills, but very cheap for NYC and with excellent, near historic food/dim sum. Also very well rated in Zagat I believe. I also liked Bleeker St for general eats including a great friendly Indian resto.

Something like over 25,000 eateries...you could eat a different place three times a day and still take many years to get through even a small sample of the half decent ones.

I know what I like and where I eat, but I don't know you and that may be totally different, so really need some more info first...Alone or more than one of you? Budget? Preferred foods? Any foods you hate? Any areas you will be in? High end? Low end? Michelin starred? Touristy? Popular with celebrities? Classic? Modern? You get the idea smile

Can you narrow it down a bit in terms of price, type of food, etc? Way too many possibilities otherwise. As an aside, the Wellington was the hotel they used for filming Borat when he gets to New York in the film!

Take a trip to Korea Town for Korean BBQ.

Have a look at Chelsea Market, it is a big brick warehouse with all sorts of foodie places inside.

As people have said, you can eat at any number of great places wherever you are. Here's my three favourites (not the fanciest!)...

Skylight diner upper Manhattan - French toast
Juniors in Brooklyn - cheesecake
Katz Deli (the when harry met sally place) - pastrami

Just back yesterday.

Highlights:

Chelsea Market - Especially if you like seafood. Almost every type of food under one roof!
Gansevoort Market - Round the corner from above- Has a Korean place that does the most delicious chicken wings.
Uptown - Had an amazing (and huge) Porterhouse at Keens Steakhouse
baekjeongnyc.com - Nice korean bbq type food.
Clintonstreetbaking.com - Very nice breakfast
Mightyquinns BBQ - amazing bbq food

Katz deli.

Incredible. I had the half corned beef and half brisket, will return every time I'm in the big Apple.

This, but there is one hidden place I ate at last week. There is the main Taco (Los Tacos No.1) place in one of the halls... However, there is a hidden little place accessible down a little Yellow and Blue corridor opposite Los Tacos.... Follow this round and it will take you to Bienvenidos Click on the link (I think its a 360 view and and you can take a look at the Menus. Basically a fantastic Fish and Shrimp Taco/Mexican Seafood place. Outstanding

Also If you are down near Penn Station/back of Macy's in the morning, walk down 34th Street to between 11th and 12th Av. to the Highline North Entrance, and walk down the Highline to the Market... its a pleasant walk.

I was there in August and also did Chelsea, Gansevoort, Clinton St and Keens!! Keens was excellent, i was pleasantly surprised. Meant to go to Mighty Quinns but got sidetracked and missed it. Shame.

edited to add: Wafels and Dinges outside Macy's - Magic. Also, Ess-A-Bagel.
