Mercedes CLK DTM AMG: Spotted

Only 100 were ever made, and there's a pair of them in the PH classifieds!

All AMG Mercs are special in their own way - yes, even the four-cylinder crossover ones - but there are always some that are just a bit more so. Or a lot more so, in some cases. Various limited editions, Performance Packs, Black Series cars, that sort of thing.

Then there's the CLK DTM AMG. To the ignorant this is a CLK with some spangly wheels and ridiculous bodywork; if you know, however, then this is one of the most spectacular AMG products ever produced.

Definitely not shy
Definitely not shy
It makes just 3hp less than a new AMG GT R, thanks to an extensively modified (new pistons, valvegear, cranckcase, supercharger and more) 5.4-litre V8 driving through a five-speed automatic. It's also one of those AMG products where all manner of detail tweaks underneath hint at it being superb to drive. Changes like an entirely redesigned rear axle, with stiffer bushes, new hub carriers and reinforced driveshafts. Bonhams sold a DTM recently and said the rear suspension "owes little to that of the stock CLK." If you care about posing then extensive suspension work will mean nothing, but it sounds great if you care about driving. The suspension was adjustable too, albeit only for height.

Those outrageous bodywork extensions to accommodate the wider tracks were formed from carbon fibre, the brakes were upgraded and the rear seats removed too. AMG went to town on this CLK, as you might rightly expect for an as-new price of £180,000.

And why did they do this? To mark the CLK's success in, you've guessed it, the DTM. 2003 was the first year the then-new C209 CLK had won the DTM, with Bernd Schneider taking his fourth drivers' championship. So what better way to mark the occasion than with 100 cars built to be roadgoing racers? Racers that weighed more than 1,700kg, granted, but then full DTM spec might have been tricky...

Alright, so it's hardly a stripped out road racer...
Alright, so it's hardly a stripped out road racer...
Today the DTM is in demand, with just 100 coupes (and 80 cabrios) produced. Furthermore, contemporary press reports suggested it was really rather good, only adding to the allure. This black car, for sale at DK Engineering, is one of just 40 that were right-hand drive and has just 18,000 miles on it. With an "outstanding service record", it's up for £204,995. For another £65K, this silver car still has a four-figure mileage.

Expensive cars then, these DTMs. It's not like you're short of alternative either. Both the CLK63 and C63 Black Series cars are available at half the money, for example. £200,000 buys a lot of SLS AMG as well. And if you wanted a rare, German, motorsport inspired track car, you can take your pick of M4 GTSs on PH at the moment.

So would your £200,000 be spent on doing your best Bernd Schneider impression? Or would it find a home elsewhere? Thoughts, as always, more than welcome!

Nice! And at least with carbon fibre extensions the rear arches won't rust like the rest of Mercedes from this era.

Really? My commuting car is a W209 CLK55 with 100k (mostly sideways) miles on the clock and it looks and drives like new. As a working car its no garage queen either unlike my others, and gets driven daily through snow, salt, rain, motorways, A/B roads + a few trackdays. And it lives by the coast.

"Take your pick of M4 GTSs on PH at the moment"... is every M4 GTS ever made on PH classifieds at the moment?

Lovely. Pricey, but much more appealing to me than an SLR

CLK DTM AMG... OMG! Could they not think of a name for it?

Maureen, perhaps? Or Desmond?

Are they really 200k now?

2014 - Silverstone Auctions - one of only 6 RHD Cabs sold for £126,000.

Crazy, isn't it? That's why I didn't just link to one car, I couldn't believe there were so many!

I miss that car! Spent a few happy moments giving that one a good blast around, insane car. It feels faster than the SLR and to my eyes is much better looking.

I would have one in a heartbeat.

I didn't realise these had quite so much power. Excellent!

Can't have been much else in 2005 that offered you 600bhp, short of what the MC12, Carrera GT, Zonda, Koenigsegg, Gumpert and some of the other silly engined 65 Mercs? I suppose the SLR was its closest 'competitor' hehe

What a great thing!

7 out of a UK allocation of 30, only 1 of which is at a BMW franchise. Given the markup either there's some serious flipping going on by purchasers, or 1/3 of owners really didn't like them.

£200k for a 1700kg thing with 100ish more hp than standard CLK AMG, some (maybe a lot) tweaks here and there, some body work and 2 less seats.

Still absolutely bonkers money for something that is based on c class Merc. Not my cup of tea for that much cash.

£200k and 2 seats with storming performance, I could name dozen cars I would buy before this.

A speculators wet dream Im sure.

I'd imagine it's mostly the former but it seems to be a fairly divisive car. The eCoty was quite interesting with two making it their #1 and some really not gelling with it at all.

With regard to the DTM, I'm sure 600HP gives you plenty to think about as it is, but I'd still want a third pedal.

This is a poster car for me.
And I'm 50 years old!!

What a motor. I've dreamed of one of these since their creation.
It's like the up to date version of the 190 evo.

Down side? Rooney had one!

Surely that is the biggest problem with it though. Will it ever be as cool as the 190 Evo II (which can crop up in the same financial ball park)?
Though to be honest - will any Merc ever be as cool as the Evo II?

I saw one go round the dunsfold track
It was mega fast down the straight up the bum of a 12c mac. The super charger rob the noise whereas the clk63black series you can here a mile awAy. Such a difference in noise but the dtm is a much faster car

I'm the biggest Mercedes AMG fan - but that is too much money.

As they say a Black Series (which is rare) can be had for less than half, what? Maybe £70k? They're taking the piss at this price.
