Evening all,

Due to a rare occurrence of actually receiving a proper bike-related Christmas present, instead of a Top Gear book or novelty something, I'm the proud owner of a Tomtom Rider 40.

It has the facility to load up pre-planned GPX routes, and follow them. That's looking useful for a trip to Ireland next year - the group I ride with seem to be happy for me to plan and lead, I'm happy to do that and have always used Michelin maps on the tank bag. The Tomtom should make it a wee bit more relaxing.

The Tomtom website/software for route planning, however, seems a bit slow and clunky.

So I was wondering if any of you had experience of any better website? I use Strava for doing the same for cycling, but it's not so intuitive for more motorbike-friendly roads.

Many thanks.

+1 for ITNConv (link from Johno). Works great if you use in combination with https://www.viamichelin.co.uk/ to see the scenic roads (green outline - just like the printed Michelin maps).

I used a great program that let you use google maps to upload waypoints to Tom Tom. It's on my laptop, will find out the name tomorrow

I use tyre too, can be a little clunky but works well once you get used to it. The TomTom route planner on their site is pretty good too and it'll send a track to your TomTom in a single click. The mapping isn't as good as Google maps that Tyre uses though.

Tyre is good but the same team have now done MyRouteApp

https://www.myrouteapp.com/en/home

Better at choosing the same exact route that your sat nav will and slightly easier to use than Tyre.

And you can choose to use TomTom mapping rather than Google which helps with accuracy when transferring the route to your TomTom
Also it's cloud based & Mac compatible which TYRE isn't.

Just tried myrouteapp and it seems pretty good, except that it takes into account closed roads (alpine passes) so you can't actually plan alpine routes until summer when the passes are open again... doh!

Edit: google maps and Tyre do the same, so not a myroute app issue.

Received a Rider 410 myself for Christmas so a useful thread, thanks OP smile

Am hoping the twisty route function helps me discover some relatively local new fun routes!

Thanks everyone for the help, I'll have a go with some of these.

I'm not too hot on motorcycle electronics, so I'll probably wait till service time and get the dealer to wire the GPS unit up. I guess it'll run on battery for a wee while.......

Cheers!

The battery life on my 410 seems very good-used it for a round trip to Portsmouth yesterday (five hours usage I would guess) with no complaints and what seems like a lot of charge left.

With regards to the route planning-I've found planning the route on Google maps using the drag & drop function if needsbe, then pasting the link into Maps to GPX (https://mapstogpx.com), downloading the file this provides onto your computer then TomTom works well. A lot quicker than it sounds!

I've only had a dabble at this and used twistyroads.com to find good motorbike routes between 2 points. No idea if it's the best out there but it gave me decent options I think, and the routes can be exported to upload to TomTom or Garmin satnavs.

Hello all,

Thanks for all the answers, the bike has been off the road for a while but I've got it going again and ready to try some of your recommendations. It looks like the Google the MapstoGPS combo is really good, with a Michelin map or website at hand to check the "interesting" roads.

Trial run on the way to work tomorrow!

Cheers
Duncan
