Suzuki Swift Sport: PH Fleet

Fogged off with lighting problems!

What is there to do in that weird lull period between Christmas and New Year? Often not a great deal, though it's amazing how afternoons, evenings and then morning can disappear thanks to the pub. Anyway, fed up with family and festive TV, I took the little Swift out for a drive one afternoon in late December. And it was absolutely brilliant, in fact.

Yep, as much fun as it looks!
Yep, as much fun as it looks!
Using the B1077 as a base and then working off wherever looked interesting, the Swift was in its element. The traffic was light, the sun was shining and the roads perfectly suited. The smaller B-roads were tight and bumpy, the little Suzuki offering great visibility and agility to tackle those. When it did open out there's just enough performance to make things interesting, and a real willingness that's getting keener with each passing mile. It was a great drive, a reminder of when driving for driving's sake can be really good fun. I may well make it a Christmas tradition is it's like that every year...

However, a busy month has thrown up one or two issues. On that B-road thrash, a traction control light continued to flash on occasion even with the system switched off. It was exiting slippery slower corners, the car just being reined in ever so slightly, and hardly a point of huge concern, but it was bizarre nonetheless. Any owners out there with similar experiences or solutions?

The other winter concerns are rather more practical, the first being the foglights. For whatever reason, the Swift Sport has its rear foglight on the left stalk but the front switch down by the driver's right knee. Annoying but not terrible; the problem is that the front fogs don't show up as on in the instrument display, only on the small illuminated switch. So if the weather changes you can forget, making you look like a berk because the foglights are still on when the fog has gone... Then one of them was smashed by a stone flying up off the road. One to get sorted.

Hello sunshine!
Hello sunshine!
While I've mentioned the Swift is pretty good on the motorway, the busy few weeks have revealed an issue: screenwash. It runs out very quickly, both the reservoirs under the bonnet not appearing to hold all that much, and there isn't a warning about low screenwash. Yes, I should check regularly (with the screenwash dipstick), but when you've brimmed it on Sunday and you're out again by Wednesday that's not especially practical.

Perhaps motorway maladies are not really fair criticisms to level at a Suzuki Swift Sport. Is fuel economy? An average of between 35 and 38 is hardly bad, and I have been driving it rather briskly, but it's a shame not to see 40mpg when the car is so light. And the claimed mpg is 44. Maybe I'll slow down a bit soon. Or maybe turbos aren't such a bad idea after all...

Speaking of which, we're looking to get the Swift paired up with a few past masters of the pocket rocket art soon. Specifically it will be the underrated and largely forgotten stuff, because that's what we feel the Swift is now actually. So if you own a car like a Mk5 Fiesta Zetec S, Panda 100HP, Lupo GTI or indeed the original Swift Sport, keep an eye on your brand specific forum!

My (totally non car) partner "quite liked" the look of the Swift last yeat in NZ, so have wondered about replacing the 10 year old but only 48K mile Micra with one. But Micras are just so well built-and nice to trundle in - that it hasn't happened yet.

Agree with the screen wash.

I'm up to 2560 miles in mine now and loving it.

Think Suzuki could do more with their fuel mapping / injection as I struggle to get 40mpg from a 1.5 GLX when 45+ was easy for me on the same route (long term) in a Puma 1.7 which has 30 bhp more and weighs about the same.

What I'd really like Matt to do is have a remap done by

Ctc performance and review that

I'm averaging over 40mpg in mine despite mostly short journeys. It's not amazing on fuel but it's not bad. I think the cam-profiles on the Sport hurt the fuel economy - apparently the 1.6 Vitara and S-cross are slightly better on fuel, despite being fractionally heavier.

I don't think the Continentals like the cold weather and greasy roads at all, but I've not had issues with the traction/stability systems wanting to get involved. There's enough feedback to feel when the roads are greasy, and the systems don't tend to intervene when, for instance, pulling briskly out of a junction in the cold and wet and getting a moments wheelspin over a white line.

These are brilliant - glad to see it's going well and that you're enjoying it.My girlfriend had one for a couple of years and she loved it.

There is a fly in the ointment however, a Ford Fiesta ST shaped fly, sadly.

None the less - a great little car, pointy, small, reasonably light and a revvy NA engine, a winning formula.

Not really had any issues with the traction control cutting in on mine either. If it has it was well deserved!

I actually moved the fog light switch to the outer most position on that bank of switches for that very reason. It no longer hides behind the wheel now so is a lot more noticeable when the warning light is on.

Our top spec Seat Ibiza doesn't have a low washer fluid level warning so I can sort of forgive the budget Swift for that. Is really annoying though.

I have a mk5 Zetec S, and it is indeed a lovely little thing, albeit plagued with rusty arches. I have wondered whether a Swift Sport would be a newer equivalent with a similar feel.

True but it's also a faster car and if you go for a base spec one they aren't that much dearer.

I drive an 80 mile round trip to work five days per week, filling up washer fluid every weekend (part of my religious weekly car washing cycle) and I don't run out! This is on A and B roads behind lorries and tractors for a lot of the time (those in east Cambridgeshire will emphathise with me and not with Mr Turner's trucks).

You guys must have a small pool of water follow you round!

It's a good point. Deals on the Fiesta are good and it's a great car. Perhaps the Swift counters if you're young by being cheaper to insure?

Running at Lupo GTi as a weekend car (although not in good enough shape to appear in any feature that's for sure!) managed 40mpg going from Edinburgh to Carlisle and back so id hope a much newer car with modern tech to at least match that.

On a side note my washer bottle is comically big for the car. think its 5 litres which means I barely ever fill it! (especially as the rear scoosher isn't actually err working)

I've been running a 2010 sport from new and working as a driving instructor it's now got 120,000 hard miles on it mainly by people who can't drive and other than regular service items I've only had to replace a coil pack, oh and the wear on the drivers seat is a little heavy although that could be down to larger sweaty pupils frown , it's a fantastic little car for no money especially second hand, reminds me very much of my MK 1 Golf GTI

35-38 mpg... your not driving it hard enough.

Curious mention about the fog lights they are are as good as useless anyway the HID's are so bright you can't see the fog lights when they are switched on.

Not all and perhaps more importantly only 3 doors. A 5 door Swift Sport is on my radar.

Well I've owned mine since start of November, just a heads up I'm very happy with it.

Although I would prefer the wheels from sz4

Why do I keep searching for SSS on Autotrader? I owned the old shape sport for 2 years and it was provided such laugh out loud moments that if other drivers saw my face they would think i'm a certified nutter. Got rid for more comfort and got a F20 1 Series M sport but I miss the swifts effervescent and chuckable nature.

Would be interesting to see how my Original GTi compares? 100bhp around 800kg and a chassis so soft it would seem slack compared with a standard Alto these days.
