RE: New McLaren Super Series first look
Wednesday 18th January 2017
It's no secret that the next Super Series is a very important car for McLaren, being the first full model range replacement for the new McLaren Automotive models. Therefore we can expect Woking to pull out all the stops (or whatever the McLaren equivalent is) for the 650S replacement.

Here's part of the "sculpted, technical yet beautiful body shape" that we'll see in full at Geneva
Having revealed the Monocage II recently, this is now the first look at the outside of the Super Series. The rear wing is specifically in focus (alright, it's all you can see) because McLaren claims this car will have twice the aerodynamic efficiency of a 650S. Maximum downforce is up 50 per cent, cooling efficiency is improved by 15 per cent and the active rear wing can now rise to its most aggressive setting in less than half a second.
Interestingly, though they can't be seen yet, vents to help this aero performance are even included in the doors. A pair of ducts will feature on each door, one to direct air into the radiators and one to draw air away from the front arches for downforce. But we'll have to wait a while to see those.
"The second-generation McLaren Super Series will be as aerodynamically impressive as it is visually beautiful," says Mark Vinnels, McLaren's Executive Director of product development. Expect more hints as to exactly what that look will be as March 7 approaches!
Discussion
I love what McLaren are doing, but the tail-lights in this have me slightly worried. If all they've done styling-wise is put a P1-like rear end on a car that looks like the P1, 570, 650 from the front, this will be a big missed opportunity. It's bad enough that the German manufacturers all design their new cars by hitting "enlarge" and "reduce" on their photocopier; I certainly don't want McLaren following that route. Not that I could afford one anyway...
It's not reminiscent of the previous models at all imo, other than maybe the much praised for visibility glasshouse.
The invisible vents and strong, taught bones are ace I think.
I'm not a huge fan of the headlight/vent graphic personally but at least it'd different.
Will look amazing framed by a wrap around rear wing. There's a lot of motion in it and that will balance it a little I think. Wild.

Here is exactly what it will look like. An undisguised prototype back in September last year, although it seemed like nobody cared about it back then for some reason...

There was actually a fair bit of discussion on the McLaren forum tbh. But it just rumbled into an argument between those loving it, those hating it and those who believed the final product would look completely different
It would be very rare for a car that finished-looking to turn out to be camouflage. Lamps don't appear to be carry over and surfaces are flowing and styled-looking with decent gap and flush. I would say this is production look, perhaps barring minor stuff like little bits of trim. I think that undisguised car is still carrying some additional bodywork.
Those exhausts surely cant exit so close to the bumper?
As such im expecting it to look a little l8ighter than it currently does. Which will hopefully improve the front end.
Regardless i think this will be brilliant.
Where the performance figures will be i have no clue but it must be getting increasingly hard to put distance between models.
The 488 genuinely closed the performance gap that everyone knew McLaren had over the 458.
If McLaren can pull out the same sort of acceleration gap as it previously held ill be very impressed.

Jeez. They're getting worse looking, not better IMHO.
It's funny, I feel the complete opposite to you - I think this new design is brilliant and at a stroke, makes the old car look, well, old. People, many on this very forum, complained when the 12c came out that McLaren weren't adventurous enough - now look at them. Very confident/technical design I think. It's like the future (as I couldn't imagine) just arrived, but in a form that I could actually purchase and drive!
Regardless of aesthetic opinion, this car is gonna sell...

Not sure I'm seeing the Zenovo so much...I'm more understanding of the 360 reference as far as the front wings are concerned but that's it.
