Just decided to check how the new Car Duty changes on 1st April 2017 will affected me. I have two cars (Tuscan vert and SAG) currently SORN'ed , so I entered the details to start their duty from the 1st Jan 2017 and it came up with £235 for 12 months and I thought great. Then looked the new rates for a PLG and I started to get confused :-

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables/rates-f...

4. Cars and light goods vehicles registered before 1 March 2001

The rate of vehicle tax is based on engine size.

Private or light goods (TC11)

Engine size (cc)

Single 12 month payment

Single 12 month payment by Direct Debit

Total of 12 monthly instalments by Direct Debit

Single 6 month payment

Single 6 month payment by Direct Debit

Not over 1549 £145 £145 £152.25 £79.75 £76.13
Over 1549 £235 £235 £246.75 £129.25 £123.38

But both cars are 1st registered 1st 2006 so

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables/other-v...

6. Other vehicle tax rates

Light goods vehicles (TC39)

Registered on or after 1 March 2001 and not over 3,500kg revenue weight (also known as maximum or gross vehicle weight).

Vehicle

Single 12 month payment

Single 12 month payment by Direct Debit

Total of 12 monthly instalments by Direct Debit

Single 6 month payment

6 months by Direct Debit

Light goods vehicle £230 £230 £241.50 £126.50 £120.75

So does this mean my Tuscan and Sagaris will be £230 but a TVR before 1st April 2001 will be £235 ... thumbup £5 cheaper bounce

Not sure where you are looking. From DVLA website:

Cars registered on or after 1st March 2001 and before 23rd March 2006 with CO2 greater than 225 are Band K = £295

They are not PLG, but cars.

Is that correct? I thought all TVRs were PLG as they were never built in big enough quantities to be emissions graded.
Or something. I have a vague recollection that they are all PLG for some reason.

Ahha, you are probably correct. Just checked my Camaro, this is shown as PLG and was £230 last May.

My 1999 Chimaera says PLG on the V5, and was £230 when renewed last.

Yes that's now , but after 1st April 2017 it appears PLGs , 1st registered after the 1st April 2006 will only be £230 smile .
I must say £2000 for the new TVR would put me off , unless they can pull off the PLG Small volume Ministers Approval trick smile

Ahhh I see. Nice to see it go down for a change. Very interesting point about the new TVR. PLG would certainly be a bonus for new buyers.

Do cars over a certain age still qualify for free road tax or have they stopped that now ?

It was reinstated 3 years ago. It was previously for cars 25 yrs old but was frozen in 1997 by Gordon Brown.

It is now rolling forward every year, but set at 40 years old.

By reclassifying them as 'historic' though, they have created a different VED class. I doubt it'll forever be £0. I can foresee the need for an 'admin charge' of £20 - £30 perhaps. Especially since, for cars registered after April 2017, only totally zero emission cars will be £0, not everything up to 99g / km.

Just Taxed the Sag .... £245 frown
At least I managed Tax the Chim before the end of March and saved myself a tenner smile

Looks all TVR as Tax Class 11 and not 39 despite the fact some were 1st registered after 1st March 2001

That's annoying. I didn't see any references to it going up, probably because the focus was on the rejigged rates for cars registered from today onwards.

By waiting out March and not taxing my Chimaera until today, I saved £19.58.

My 2004 Tuscan is on direct debit and they've just taken £235 so who knows! At least if it's underpaid then it's their own fault!

Worth noting that the original link : https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables/other-v...

Is now showing £240 for a year?

Yet this link is showing £245:

So they appear to be as useless as their reputation!
