£100K Garage: Gareth Stubbs

A 205 GTI made faster, a 911 made faster, a V10 M5 and a nice slow Land Rover to balance them out

Name: Gareth Stubbs
Previously owned: Just the one
Currently owned: Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 GP (Still a very poor student)
On the shortlist: Porsche 997 GT3, old Landies of any kind, Porsches 928, BMW M5 (E39), BMW M3 (E46), Lotus Elise S1 and many more!

70s: Land Rover Series 3 Station Wagon
Cost:
£12,995
Balance: £87,005
Why I chose it: "Every collection of cars should have an old Land Rover, in my opinion. I can't help but smile when I see one trundling (very, very slowly) along the road. I've only ever sat it one and I know they are more similar to a tractor than a car, but I love that charm. This one fell within the right era, has a nice paint job and, most importantly, seems entirely original. It's a waste to not use these cars as they were intended so I'd make sure to find some muddy slopes for it to climb up and enjoy it for the timeless British engineering marvel that it is."

80s: Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 Turbo Technics
Cost: £5,500
Balance: £81,505
Why I chose it: "I was looking for a bone stock Peugeot 205 GTI for the collection here, but none were in budget. The fact this is so heavily modified may upset some purists but personally I think the idea of a lightweight hatchback with this kind of power and hardware will make a thrilling track car, especially around Knockhill."

90s: Porsche 911 (993) Carrera
Cost: £54,995
Balance: £26,510
Why I chose it: "I love 911s and have grown more and more fond of the air-cooled cars over the years. In terms of driving and usability surely the 993 is the pinnacle, being fast enough but still mechanically analogue in feel and, if you so wish, every day useable. I also think they look absolutely superb, especially in dark iris blue like this one. Like the Peugeot this has been modified but I think the character of the car would be retained and just turned up to 11. This would be the weekend car, but I have a feeling I'd use it all the time just to hear that flat six start up in the morning."

2000s: BMW M5 Touring
Cost
: £23,500
Balance: £3,010 (The balance would be kept for the inevitable big bills for the Beemer)
Why I chose it: "I love fast estates and I love M cars. Being able to combine them in surely what is the coolest Q-car ever seems like the ideal solution to daily transportation. I know they potentially have big bills and running one will never be cheap, but the thought of a 5.0-litre V10 powering the rear wheels of what is now, in my eyes, a great looking estate car can't be beaten. This one isn't my first choice of colour but the ad shows an owner who seems to really care about his cars and has looked after it well. After getting it, the M badges would be off and I'd be chasing down 911s on the Autobahn on a European jaunt!"

That 993 seems to be a bit of an odd one - a £55k car and the £400 stereo is by separate negotiation?

That E61 M5 is the star of that collection, such a crazy car!

I was checking out that M5 on Autotrader earlier this morning. They're mad as a bag of tracksuits, but I really want one.

That V10 would be utterly ruinous, though.

That SMG was horrid in the M6 (only reason I didnt buy it), I imagine it's even more so in the Touring..

They don't make them anymore and they're very difficult to get hold of. But it does come across as very tight, if you're that bothered take it out and sell separately.

Then again £55k for a pre vario 104k mile 993 is simply a dream, despite the mods!

With +/- 200 units on UK roads I'm not surprised. There's one in my bit of Kent. Aside from the 19" BBS wheels, wing vents, quad pipes and badges it looks just like my 535d M sport - that's why I love them.

Subtly done as they have been on this one they make for a better car.

The M5 is my car, I have been paid a very large deposit within 24hrs of the car being listed on pistonheads.

Probably will regret letting it go :-(

Love the 993, especially in that colour. Gives me a great opportunity to blatantly post a photo of my old one from days in Spain.

Would have another in a heartbeat if they hadn't doubled in price since I sold it - probably a coupe in the UK.

Agreed, all 993 owners love to tinker, it's almost impossible not to!. Though I do think the suspension accusations laid at the monroes aren't totally true. Anyhow, we're getting off topic....

Varied selection and great choices.

I'd be going for similar types of car, but my M5 would be an E39, my 205 GTI would be a Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy, the 911 would likely be a 997 Carrera S, and the Land Rover a more modern one with a 300TDi as a pickup. Full rollcage. ARB diff lockers, lift kit etc.

Looks like you need to pop out to your driveway and do a farewell photoshoot combined with a "living with my glorious M5 Touring" story thread...

Sounds great but then you have 2/3 cars from the same decade which breaks the current rules!

Don't mean to put a downer on the OP's choices or anything but I'm not enjoying the new 100K garage format. I personally thought it was more enjoyable how it was, being able to choose whatever you like within the 100K. I have tried to put a garage together using this format but I couldn't find 4 cars from the different decades that I was actually interested in within budget. Could just be me!

I like 993s as much as anyone but I couldn't bring myself to spend over £50k on a 20+ year-old 'vanilla' 911 - esp not one in "Doom Blue" smile

I'd assumed mods would REDUCE the value as this car boom is supposed to be about people seeking a different experience to newer cars/appreciating older cars more etc. etc. - hey ho, over £50k is mug money but if you must, you must.

Makes the 205 look cheap (compared to other cars I've seen so I'm assuming the mods are dipping it's value in this case?) and it's not cheap by any means but if needed a 205 in my life (and I probably do but then I probably don't!) that looks like a corker (assuming it's actually working as intended!!) smile

I wasn't even aware of such a silly rule, and if I was, I'd still have ignored it. Are we no longer doing the FWD/RWD/4WD thing?
I ignored that too.
