BMW M2 facelift spied

If you didn't get an original, start badgering your BMW dealer now!

You don't need us to tell you that the BMW M2 is a very desirable motor car; while production was never limited, being built on the same line as a regular 2 Series would always restrict how many could be built. As such its residual value is strong, with £45K still the entry point even with 15,000 miles.

However, it looks like there's going to be another M2. Here's our first look at the facelifted car, presumably due sometime after the regular 2 Series update. Much of what appealed about the M2 seems to be present here - see the broad rear haunches, quad exhausts and huge front discs - only with a BMW nip 'n' tuck front and rear. Life Cycle Impulse is what these sort of refreshes are usually called.

The front looks to now include LED headlights as on the latest M4, while the front bumper now appears even more aggressive. Who knew that was possible? It is of course not quite production ready yet, so let's see. The tweaks at the back appear more modest, again with refreshed lights and perhaps a bumper change due if the disguise is hiding something.

Other than those fairly minor points, it looks like being the same M2 we currently know and love. A power gain seems unlikely given the M4 facelift didn't bring any additional poke; wouldn't want to impact on any sale of the more expensive car now. There's a Frankfurt show this year - don't forget it alternates with Paris as the big European show in September - where an M2 debut would surely fit very nicely. Bring it on!

Judging by the size of the brake calipers, that looks like the rumoured CS, rather than just the LCI.

This CS looks more balanced in how it arches over those wheels.
M3 detuned engine and hopefully lighter than the current M2...

Hm, so they've taken the one thing away from the M2 that it had over the M4 - a decent sound?

Great.

No doubt i should put a deposit on one and flip it for the winnings - but with that engine (and it's godawful wasps nest sound) it's surely not a thing to cherish? frown

As someone who has a deposit down for the rumoured CS/CSL/GTS, I'd be disappointed if this was it. I was expecting more aggression and a big wing at least. Always need a big wing! biggrin

Wing's apart (you are of course right.. CS/CSL/GTS whatever needs a 'fk you' wing) Would you be satisfied with that noise?! the M2 sounds nicer as is imo.

Everything's got a wing these days, surely the core values of a CS/CSL/GTS model should be the lightness, engine and way it drives.

Also have deposit down for CS/CSL/GTS whatever comes first. Passed on a normal M2 because it just didn't seem special enough to me. Rather than big wings personally I would prefer to see along the lines of E46 CSL. Slightly more aggressive looks and stance, carbon or magnesium used etc. better seats. Dont get me wrong I would love to see a M2 GTS aswell.

If we do see a CSL or GTS I think it will be a while off. For now it will be a CS (A tweaked normal M2)

How do you go about putting a deposit down for a non-confirmed car? I'm picturing the completely puzzled look on my dealer's face when I propose this to them...

Most dealers have already taken multiple deposits for the rumoured car that doesn't exist yet, so I doubt they'd be too puzzled.

I think both a CS and GTS would be ideal. I'm only interested in a the more hardcore version, be it a CSL or GTS.
Noise is an issue if they do opt for the S55 then noise may be an issue, but I hope they can tweak it to be more aurally appealing. There will likely be less sound deadening and perhaps no fake speaker noises so that will change the dynamics of the sound.

Looks quite an interesting car and yes I'm sure all the deposits down mean it's already sold out

Wow, they've finally given a 45k car some LED indicators, welcome to the late 2000s BMW

Yes but they still are in the 1970s for offering a manual 2wd performance car with a 6-pot and LSD. How dare they ?

I've just read a German mag that says 2 things; the 2 series will be facelifted, to be revealed at Frankfurt in September. New front styling, new LED rear lights, so pretty much what you see here. The M2 will have a 'slight' power increase in order to distance it from the 240i.
The CS is coming in 2018 & will have the S55 mill. I agree that the model pictured is a bit of a mongrel in so far as it's a facelift, but with those brakes it's a bit more than a facelift!

Fourth on the list at my local dealer.

Not optimistic about seeing a car at the end of that!
