£100K Garage: Mat Finch

A serial Porsche fan explains why only Stuttgart's finest found their way into his garage!

Name: Mat Finch
Previously owned: Porsche 996 Targa, 3x Porsche Boxster, Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet, Porsche 968 Sport, Range Rover, BMW 535, Golf GTI Mk1
Currently owned: Porsche 997 CSR (the feature car built by RPM Technik), Porsche 911 3.2 Cabriolet, Porsche Panamera Diesel.
On the shortlist: "Porsche 996 C4S, Land Rover Defender and a Porsche tractor (don't ask!)"

70s: Porsche 928
Cost
: £19,995
Balance: £80,005
Why I chose it: "Intended to replace the 911, the 928 was built as a high performance GT-car with a massive 4.8 V8 and had technology well ahead of its time (which can mean trouble today). This one has recently been restored in a very 70s retro pastel blue with striking pasha trim. Perfect for road trips through France (with European breakdown cover)."

80s: Porsche 911 3.2 Targa
Cost
: £29,995
Balance:£50,010
Why I chose it: "I love the impact bumper era of 911. They basically took the original shape and interior of the early 911, and added a more powerful engine and modern gearbox. I never tire of the unique sound of that air cooled six-cylinder. Perfect for a Sunday morning drive with the targa roof open."

90s: Porsche Boxster S
Cost
: £5,750
Balance: £44,260
Why I chose it: "Many people turn their nose up at the Boxster, but having owned three, I love them. Mid-engined with perfect balance and great handling. They share many of the components with the 996, and here for under £6k. This S looks tidy and well maintained. Perfect track day to chuck around Bedford autodrome without worrying about stone chips or depreciation!"

00s: Porsche 996 Turbo
Cost
: £42,750
Balance: £1,510
Why I chose it: "It's fast becoming a modern classic and moved the 911 into supercar performance. The Turbo had the 'Mezger' engine, which differs from other 996s, as it derives from the GT1 Le Mans car and is also used in the GT2 and GT3. This one looks great in black and black leather, excellent condition and lots of history. Perfect for German autobahns and welsh B-roads."

Loving the sense of humour !

A 928 is a slightly safer bet for Euro trips than a 996 wink

Clearly this is likely to be a personal taste issue, but without fail one of the worst 100k's I have seen in a long long time...

I had forgotten how odd 928s look from behind!

The interior of that 928 is worth every penny of the £20k - tho the exterior is looking dated in a way which redefines dated.

The later cars really came together - probably more than any other car - but that interior is BOSTIN!!

p.s. also, given the crazy prices for some Porsches, this is a lot more Porsche than I thought you'd get for £100K - tho I might have scrounged around for the £10K to upgrade that Boxster to a Cayman because it would be a MUCH better trackslag?

As per the new rules, it was 100% not intended to offend, I am more than confident you would feel the same if I ever did a 100k garage!

Not a bad selection. I haven't seen a 928 for a while! I borrowed a V8 model for a night about 5 years ago, made a lot of noise but not very quick.

Depends which variant and whether it was a badly maintained one. Factory standard GT and GTS are about as quick as a 2002 911 in real world, despite running lower bhp and extra 10 years maturity. That's progress apparently biggrin
