Formula Off Road: Time For Coffee?

A Nordic motorsport involving driving across a lake

Look deep enough and you will find plenty of interesting race series taking place beyond the mainstream circuit and rally championships. That can include anything from lawnmower races to those with people towing trailers but every now and then something properly mad turns up. Formula Offroad is just that. It is WRC, sprint racing and good old rock crawling mixed together with shots of nitrous and Icelandic madness.

Our colleagues over at Autocar headed out to Iceland to chat with reigning Formula Offroad Champion Snorri Thor Arnason and take a peek under the bonnet of his mental creation named 'Choir Boy'. It's fitted with an LS3 V8, which has been stroked out to 7.0-litres with a modest 700hp and a bottle of nitrous that can up the power by 400hp to 1,100hp for good measure.

There are two classes, the Modified Class where the body must resemble a mass-produced vehicle and the Unlimited Class where the sky is the limit and where Choir Boy is champion. The Unlimited class allows for paddle tyres to help grip the on the soft sand and mud and looks like an incredible experience.

I'm off to watch it in iceland later this year with my boys. Some family members run cars to I'm hoping to get a passenger ride. Been wanting to watch it for years but we've never been there at the right time before. Can't wait.
