The Ultime is currently on a cable system to the Porsche transaxle box.

Has anyone ever retro-fitted a solid rod system and got rid of the cable system?

If so, is it worth doing (does it work??) and who supplies the bits?

Many thanks as usual,
Ed

Sounds a bitsilly to me!

OK, sorry but I couldn't resist.

Why would you want to?
Is your cable system centre of the car or mounted on/in the side pod?

A good quality, well designed, correctly adjusted cable system should work a treat.

I have a rod system right hand change, which also works well, but must be kept lubricated to the point where I need to do it every few hundred miles.

Most do it the other way around and go from solid to cable.
Less noisy in the cabin apparently.

The name stuck from a long while ago when I had a 4.6 John Eales engine in a Westfield, it truly was a bit silly!!

That all sound good, it may save a few bob if lubricating and adjusting it works.
I am slowly working through the car so it is now on my list.
The car was sitting for a long time and needs a good sorting.

Interesting about folk going the other way.

Has anyone driven both?

ps 'noise in the cabin' you can't exactly hear a pin drop in mine!

I'll throw in another option..... replace the Porsche plastic-crap shifter with the CAE Ultra Shifter. OMG, what a difference!

Thanks... it's not perfect, but I was out of time to install before my Swiss road trip last yr, so it had to "do". Will tweak it this summer hopefully.

Given a choice I would have a a solid rod shifter over a cable any day, my Pantera and GT40 provide so much more positive feel in shifting. I spent a long time with the Ultima trying to get the shifter to work in all gears. It's better but not 100% still, although I think I am very tempted by that CAE shifter, does it come as a cable shifter or require modification?

It's for the 996/7 cable gearboxes. The feel is 100% better than the stock plastic crap Porsche shifter.

I had a solid shift rod in my 550 spyder and it worked flawlessly. But there is a price to pay for this, mounting the rods requires room and holes to be cut in the firewall. Multiple mounting locations have to be found or fabricated to keep the rods in place.

I have built a G96/50 rod shift system :-)
My Ultima is RHD and I wanted to keep the shifter on the right side.
It uses the stock rod connection with a selfmade mechanism on the transmission.

This image shows the prototype.
It looks complicated, but is good to adjust and works very well.

I've been asking the same question lately, can I go from cable centre shift to rhs rod shift?

I think the latter is the purer option and more in keeping with the origin of the car. So, can I assume that because people have done the opposite, that it is indeed possible to go from cable back to rod shift?
Has anyone done so?

Can you have a CAE with a rod shifter?
