Ford GT Competition Series announced

Goodness knows when customers will actually get it, but here's the lighter, racier Ford GT

Given what's already known about the Ford GT, a version with a harder edge never sounded like something it needed. Still, you won't find us complaining about a fast car made faster still, so here's the Ford GT Competition Series.

You're still seeing the pig, aren't you?

First things first: Ford has so far only confirmed the Competition Series for North America in "all announced production years." Furthermore, despite an extensive range of weight-saving measures, an actual kerbweight hasn't been released. And it still has just the 655hp...

There are a suite of interesting standard (and deleted) features though. The carbon wheels, titanium wheel nuts and titanium exhaust that are optional on the regular GT are fitted on the Competition Series, for example. There's also a focus on reducing weight high up in the car, with a new Perspex engine cover, a carbon fibre rod to hold the bonnet open, and Gorilla Glass behind the bulkhead that's half as weighty as regular glass.

The air-con, radio, storage bins and cupholders have been ditched too; the GT was hardly an accommodating, luxurious supercar beforehand, so this is a pretty drastic step. There's plenty of visible carbon too - "copious carbon" in fact, according to Ford - to reflect your commitment to the lightweight cause.

A proper driver focused supercar? Yes!
A proper driver focused supercar? Yes!
Inside the GT CS receives red paddle shifters and instrument panel, with a new centre console - alright, centre console plate - to cover up where your radio and air-con should be. It's going to be warm in there!

For those fortunate US customers, the Competition Series will be offered in Shadow Black, Frozen White, Ingot Silver, Liquid Grey, Liquid Blue and Triple Yellow. Price? Don't be so ridiculous. It will headline the Ford display at the Daytona 500 this weekend. Well worth getting a sit in if you can!

Can someone explain to me what the fuss is about with the Ford GT? Seems to get a lot of hype compared to its competition. I can't see what is particularly ground breaking about it.

they keep delaying that thing and those 650 hp will slip below the entry level from Ferrari and co. If not already.

this must be really annoying for customers unless Ford are offering the chance to change existing orders to add this package

Ford has a good marketing team and budget which is why you see it in the press a lot.

AFAIK they haven't delivered a single normal one yet!

I really want to like this car but the way Ford have conducted themselves with regard to it, has turned me right off it.

Cars will always be improved over time and something better will always come along. This is the nature of engineering, it’s inevitable. If customers are annoyed by the speed of improvement and want a product with a longer period between design revisions there’s an easy solution, just buy a horse.

You've got to laugh at this. The poor old ford GT is already so stale that thy have to start wheeling out the investment, erm, I mean 'special' editions. I wonder what the patient speculators who bought the original one (which they don't have yet) will make of this? We live in interesting times...

If I was GM I'd be hurrying that mid-engined C8 Corvette along...

Because it's the most exclusive car in the world! Mainly cause nobody (still!) has one yet...

On a serious note I have seen the race car up close and personal and it looked stunning and would expect the same of the road version. I guess it's also to do with it's racing pedigree and the GT40 story/heritage. You can definitely see the influence of the GT40 in this car, and the GT40 is one of the coolest cars ever to have existed imo. Ford GTs don't come around too often, so I suppose there's that too.

that's a tad over the top don't you think?

if Ferrari had announced the 430 scud and started taking orders before any customers had even received delivery of their ordinary 430 then it would cause lots of anger.

There is something refreshingly blue collar about this car. And it just looks like it works all together - from looks to enhancements, to performance. Brilliant
