I had one of the first Huracan spyders last year, delivered in April, with every option ticked. Drove it for four months, did 4.5k miles and sold it for almost list.

I want another one for this summer, now that they've dropped heavily in price. But not a single one has the sensonum upgrade. I'm planning a lot of miles again, so it's not just about "put the roof down and listen to the engine" all the time.

Yet every single 650s on sale has the meridian upgrade. So I'm confused, why does everyone upgrade the sound system in the mclarens but not in the lambos. Are the standard mac sound systems just terrible? Or are the people who drive them more likely to listen to music?

Just as guess, but the Huracan's normally aspirated V10 sounds glorious so a high end sound system is pointless whereas the turbo V8 in the McLaren needs all the help it can get.

My memory is hazy but I think the Meridian is a whole system upgrade actually giving you more features rather than just a better sound.

Perhaps if the Huracan upgrade is just more speakers or improved fidelity people don't view it as necessary.

I did test a Huracan and spend some time with the sales guy but I can't remember the details.

Unlike the 12C the Meridian DSP is the standard 650S sound system but on top of that there is the extra "surround" speaker upgrade which gives you 3 small speakers for £3k. These speakers are located 1 in the centre dash and 2 behind the seats just under the rear window.
I purposely did not elect to have the "surround" sound upgrade for the very reason I wanted to hear the engine with the rear window down and not have the stereo competing with it from behind.

It certainly works for me with no "surround" sound as the standard 4 speaker system is fine in terms of volume and quality and I don't need sound coming from behind me when I have that barking V8 engine. With the roof and rear window up the cabin is pretty small anyway and I would find anymore sound a bit overpowering

Those that are really into their music quality may argue you don't have the same full depth by having no surround but TBH I could hardly notice the difference.

Can't comment on the Lamborghini systems as I haven't heard them in the car on the go.

Are you considering a 650S spider then ?

Yeah, I'm considering both the Huracan Spyder and 650S Spyder. The latter is much cheaper these days, but the ergonomics of the Huracan are perfect for me, whereas I've never tried the 650S. The Huracan (with sensonum) has a perfect sound system, the perfect place for my phone holder (for Waze, saved me many times in Europe), the boot is exactly the right size for a suitcase I have (Cabin Air Max Berlin for anyone who's interested - a few quid on Amazon), it's perfect on the track and safe in torrential downpours. Basically it was quite literally the perfect car. But since I only do a few road trips in the summer, then don't drive for the rest of the year, and have an RS6 as a main car, it made no sense to keep it and face the depreciation. But now I can't find the right second hand one for this summer, whereas there are quite a few perfect-spec 650S out there.

Can't go wrong with a 650S spider at todays prices IMHO. Totally under appreciated and undervalued. Though that said those that have bought one now fully appreciate how great they are and are only astonished at the price they managed to get one for. Such an all round accomplished car and perfect for road trips.

Hasn't got the same sense of pantomime every time you drive it like a Lamborghini but it doesn't lack in drama or excitement the more you drive it. And its got Lambo doors !!!!!!! unlike the Huracan ???
I think there should be a rule that a supercar is not a supercar without dihedral doors.

Have Huracan spyder prices really dropped much ?
A lot of used ones still at £220k which in comparison to a 650S spider at say £180K seems far too expensive. If there was a like for like car I would personally say the McLaren was worth the £40k extra.

A change is good as a rest so get a 650S spider bought, you wont be disappointed and it will cost you a lot less than the lamborghini

That looks like the best plan Rambo. Would you consider buying from a non-McLaren dealer, and would you do any kind of tests on the car before buying? For example I've had my RS6 for four years, although only 10k miles, but it's already needed a new set of carbon ceramic disks (luckily on warranty). I was wondering whether I should get the car sent to McLaren for an inspection, especially on the brakes, and whether there's anything else I should watch out for?

If you are only going to run it for 12 months and you buy a 15 or 16 plate you will still have the balance of the 3 yr manufacturers warranty so you can source the best/cheapest car from whoever with the normal due diligence and not really have to worry.

650S seems to be a lot better put together than the early MP4 -12C with no major issues as far as I know. A lot of comments from ex 12C owners who have upgraded to 650S saying how much tighter and better the build quality of 650s feels.
You may get an odd squeak from the ceramic brakes but there is a dampner fix if your car is effected badly.
IRIS II is fine.

If you buy from McLaren dealer ypou will get a 2 yr warranty with an approved used car which might be helpful come resale if you intend to dispose of it privately.

If you go to an independent I can recommend Alistair Bols as the McLaren officianado.

If you can minimise the retail to trade premium on purchase and disposal I think the actual depreciation itself on the car will be minimal at £170k

Thank you, super helpful. There's a fantastic one at Alastair Bols right now. Going to have to get in touch and see what I can wangle on the price.

The red one is just there for marketing purposes to make it look like they have lots - hasn't actually been on sale on the other platforms over past few months. But the orange one is also on autotrader, and ticks all the boxes. Except for it's 10k more than I reckon I can find one for..

Alastair doesn't seem to have much stock at the moment.
Either he has had a good run on sales or the owners have withdrawn them to run for another season.

At the current price point there seems to be a very healthy turnover of vehicles so if a good one comes up you need to be a position to move IMHO. Will always be a few undesirable low spec cars that stick but they eventually go at a bargain price.
I can see supply starting to dry up a bit now as we come into Easter

Interesting - when I sold my huracan I gave it back to the original lambo dealer for sor and it went in under a week, but they wanted it there, wouldn't start selling until I actually gave it to them. Do other dealers do the marketing while letting the owners keep the car until there's an offer? I'm almost certainly going to sell my summer car in July again once the road trips are done bit before the summer is finished. But don't want it just sat there at the dealer.

So you guys have persuaded me and it's definitely going to be a 650S. Lots of choice on the classifieds, and they're shifting, whereas the Huracans have been up there for months and no one is buying, so I definitely don't want to be stuck with one of those.

Two questions if you can help me out:

Most of the ones I want are at non official dealers. My spec is specific. Need the lifter, need the upgraded Meridian, need lowish mileage as I'll put on 5k or so over the summer before selling and don't want to go over the 10k mark.

1. I'm worried about the car having been in an accident and fixed without going through insurance or a formal dealer. I'm also worried someone might have ruined the carbon ceramic discs. I'm assuming that an official dealer would own up to this as they'd have to fix it after when I bring it in for a service. How do I make sure I don't get myself a dud from a non official dealer? Would they send the car to mclaren for an inspection if I offer to pay for it?

2. How much movement is there typically on price? Most of the cars are £170k-£180k. Do I come in at £10k under? How would you suggest getting it down to the best price?

Thanks again.

1. They should have no problem sending it for an inspection, though they may want a deposit first as it is a pain in the ass for them.

2. I wouldn't start at £10k under, nearer £5k. They won't have £20k across them.
