Chevrolet Camaro: Spotted

The latest (very good) Camaro in the UK with a manual, a V8 and a £40K price - tempted?

There has been enough time now with decent American cars for a pattern to appear: the car is well received in the US, well enough in fact for many to be convinced it might work here, only for the exchange rate or something else to bump the price up for prospective UK customers. What might be an interesting curio, something different to the usual German offerings, suddenly becomes priced out of contention. See the Dodge Charger Hellcat; a family man with an imagination might be tempted by a 700hp alternative to an M5, but not at £135K.

MOVE
MOVE
Which is where this Hyper Blue Camaro comes in. While it would be easy to dismiss this sixth-generation car (because it looks so similar to the previous one), the reports so far have been overwhelmingly positive. When Mike Duff drove it for PH he returned full of praise, while one of the US outlets suggested it was better than an M4. Really.

And here's one in the UK, in a very desirable spec featuring eight cylinders, six manual gears and magnetically controlled dampers. It's brand new, gleaming in the Surrey sunshine with a price of £39,400. Forty grand! Let alone the M4, this has just pitched itself against the M2.

This Camaro actually undercuts the cheapest M2s now available, even those cars with 15,000 miles. Moreover, the manual, rear-wheel drive coupe with a big engine isn't a recipe familiar to Mercedes or Audi either. Not really familiar to anybody in 2017, to be honest.

Well, apart from Ford of course. Who knows what the waiting list is at the moment, but in theory there's nothing to stop you paying £36,345 for a manual V8 Mustang right now. If you needed a car immediately there's a glut available at less than £40K in desirable specs and, of course, in right-hand drive.

Because who doesn't love V8, RWD manuals?
Because who doesn't love V8, RWD manuals?
Does the availability of Mustangs undermine the Camaro's appeal? It does and it doesn't. Of course right-hand drive appeals with the Ford, particularly with the Chevy's notoriously poor visibility. But where the Mustang used to be the niche muscle car option, buyers able to show their dedication by sitting on the wrong side, that's no longer the case. Arguably only something like a Camaro now shows off your commitment. But then that being said, muscle car loyalties run deep; you may only want a Mustang, you may only want a Camaro... See what we mean?!

What's guaranteed with this Camaro is exclusivity, with just 18 build slots allocated to Ian Allan Motors. You could pay an awful lot more money for a much more common car, if that's a key criteria. It looks like nothing else on the road (alright, apart from maybe an old Camaro), goes very fast and probably handles far better than you might expect. Like pretty much all of this latest breed of muscle cars, it's a fast American V8 that you no longer have to make excuses for. Never know, you might actually like it...

£135k?
What??
How much???
The list price of a Hellcat, fully optioned, is £58,710 when converted.
A £76,290 difference.
Shipping and taxes (20% vat and 10% import duty iirc) makes it circa £77.5k if I'm not mistaken.
Or you can get RORO and insurance for circa £2k (more if you want a container I'm told)
Plus the cost of converting lights etc for the IVA test., which will narrow the £57,500 difference a little more.
But that's still one heck of a price difference. Or profit.
Or am I just being either an automotive xenophobe, or just purely against people ripping us off?
And I stand to be corrected if the values I've given above are wrong btw!!!

Much more presence than the Mustang, very nice. The interior looks far better than previous model too.

IMO the biggest failing for me with these big coupes is the lack of usable** rear seats, which renders them a little pointless over the superior Corvette as a sports car.

  • Note: By "usable" I imply for all people other than contortion artists with dwarfism.

Shameless profiteering based upon a shortage of stock in the UK. Doubt anybody would be stupid enough to pay that price. Its been up a while.

There is one other on sale on PH though at 60k. 2015 with 10k miles. You'd be mad to pay the 135k for the newer car. Its still used as well with 1 owner and a 2016 car.

I had a Camaro (only a V6 frown) as a hire car in America last year. Was really impressed. Drove nicely, well built, good performance and a lovely rasp when accelerating. Difficult to be totally objective based on cruising the Pacific Highway in the sun with the roof down but it did make me think that as a package I would enjoy one over here. Another league compared to the previous generation Mustang that I hired a few years ago. Would love to try a V8.

I live out in NY and have the previous version (5th Gen) v6 with 330hp.

they are great cars, I am hoping to upgrade to this shape v8, I have test drove a couple, they are brilliant to drive, the 450hp v8 sounds fantastic. its incredibly quick too, and the both my shape and the new shape handle well too. Manufacturers stats have them 4.0s to 60. no slouch. and this is the base v8 SS!

However in the UK I have my doubts, you sit very low, and the massive square bonnet will make it very hard to see out of in Britain. The only real downside is visibility is atrocious.

plus that price is stupid. maybe i should import a few back home!

the only positive is that with both Ford and GM ceasing production in Australia we might see some more RHD V8s over here

Is it just me that's confused about how you'd hold the 'rev match' toggle in, whilst shifting gear... Given they're both on the right of the driver??

I had a V8 convertible version of the previous generation as a hire car whilst dicking around in Houston a couple of years ago, the interior was a bit pants and the white paint was pretty stty (the above blue is lovely, and black/dark grey looks mean, mean mean) but the engine was splendid, it had oomph everywhere, and I mean everywhere, any speed, any gear, any tap on the accelerator and it was off - alas it was mated to a bit of a dim witted auto box, but the V8 was an absolute peach lick

I've got the previous gen in V8 auto guise. You get used to the (lack of) visibility. You will not get used to the shock of finding another one in a car park or the general fun of driving a hilariously impractical* shouty American car.
Having seen the feature car in the flesh, the red tintcoat is the best colour, but the matt blue with stripe is very impressive.

  • you can fit actual adults in the back of a 5th gen. The most I've managed is one as otherwise the other half would have to be driving. There is also more than enough space in the boot for a two week European roadtrip which, let's face it, is what this is actually best suited for

It's a switch for turning rev match on/off. Rev matching happens when changing down with the system enabled.
