In the handbook for my Chimaera 500 (and similarly in various motoring magazines) the following figures are stated:
power 340bhp
weight 1060kg
power/weight ratio 307bhp/ton .

However, the VIN plate under the bonnet states a gross weight of 1270kg and various unofficial sources suggest the maximum bhp is more like 270bhp, giving a power/weight ratio of only 212bhp/ton (eg a little over 2/3 of what TVR claim!). So how can such misleading figures be allowed to be published?

Are the quoted weights with and without fluids, with and without driver and passenger, or what?? 20% is one hell of a discrepancy.

Does anyone know the true weight and power output?

Do you really care about figures? Or is your interest in the marque, the noise, the fun and the grin factor?

Agreed, but there's still the subject of misrepresentation, isn't there?

There is, true, but it's hardly a new one.

Owner: I don't think this car has 420bhp (for example)
Dealer: I'm sorry sir -- is it not fast enough?
Owner: Well, I wouldn't say that...
Dealer: Thank-you sir, do call again.

or maybe

Dealer: They all do that, sir!

I hate to say it but this site is beginning to bore me rigid - the same stuff over and over again; BHP, whinge, I went through a camera, whinge, I've got 17 inches, whinge... Not a dig at you alan_d, you've not been a member that long. (shite, I'm whinging..). By the way, it's worth having a look at the topic search before posting.

The camaraderie is fantastic and if you have a fault this place is the dogs danglies. A big thumbs up for that!!!

Ted, any chance of putting the voting scores alongside the thread so that the trash can be avoided?

Have you never hung out on a forum or newsgroup for an extended period of time, macca? You'll always get newbies asking the same questions.

It does beg the question as to whether we need a site FAQ though, I guess.

Sorry if this is a FAQ. I did do a search before posting and couldn't find the answers to these questions, so if there is a thread, I'd really appreciate it if someone could post the link?

By the way I'm not wingeing about the car!!! I love the car regardless of the figures on paper. The performance on the road (where it matters) is staggering compared with any other car I've driven, but if you can't rely on the published data when trying to select a model I just think its rather pointless magazines printing pages of performance tables.

Isn't the gross vehicle weight the MAXIMUM weight the vehicle is designed to able to cope with (ie roof rack full of luggage, two fat blokes, boot full of breeze blocks etc)? The kerb weight is the usually quoted figure, which could well be 1060kg.

The max gross weight catches my attention because if you deduct 1060 from 1270, you get 210kg. Now, I weigh 100kg and if I had a similarly sized passenger, that woulg leave only 10kg left!!!
Does that mean 2 16 stone blokes with a boot of luggage are now breaking the law / invalidating the insurance 'cos max weight has been exceeded??
It probably means you can put 1270kg of people / stuff in the car but that would make the max possible all-up weight 2.3 tonnes!!!!!!

Well yes, even 20% less than 340bhp is quite a lot. But we're only comparing what's on the box with what's inside. If you buy a 32" TV, get it home and find it's only 28", what do you do??!! I think there's a legal thing about 'goods as advertised'...

So it's Sunday and I'm bored!

At www.pistonheads.com/features/dyno.htm there's a Griff 500 which clocks 201 bhp. No one seems surprised, yet it's only 59% of what it says on the box.

NB That sounded like a good trip, though I deduce it was some while ago - any more planned?

I assume the 201 was at the wheels? The TVR quoted figure will be for a stripped engine (no ancillaries) run on a dyno so no transmission losses either (even so it is probably still optimistic). Perhaps TVR should just quote 'much more than adequate' ala Rolls Royce?

You will probably find all manufacturers figures don't belong in the real world. 0-60 times that are unachievable.Fuel consumption figures where the car travells in 5th gear at contant throttle for 400 miles.Probably the most famous tweaking of figures was the press car when the E-type jaguar was released.all sorts of tweaks and weight saving things were done, even the stick on front number plate, to make the car achieve the advertised 150mph.People who then bought an E-type found the top speed was off the mark.
