Getting a bit fed up with my cars, but cant think of any sort of alternative.

Really hate the 200SX (just about everything about it), and the RX7 is ok but single figure MPG makes it really expensive to use everyday. I can only really run one car, due to insurance being too expensive to have two (just keep swapping the policy at the moment depending on which one is working).

So whats the fastest rwd car you can get for about 5k? RX7 is about 330bhp and 1250kg, so the trouble is most things feel a bit slow. Dont mind slower as long as the handling or fun makes up for it. Doesnt need to be practicle really, but does need to be able to be used daily and live outside so no Caterham type things.

Is there really no decent alternatives as it seems?

That's a toughie! Wouldn't you have more than 5k to play with if you sold both of them?

I'd sell the 200 and use the money to help pay for the petrol (and oil!) on the Mazda for a year or two. Other alternatives are MR2 turbo and.....mmm supercharged MX5? Otherwise I'm clueless (nowt new there)

BMW 850i - though you would be looking at the bottom end of the market.

Jaguar XJR - the supercharged 6 cylinder rather than the V8 though.

Porsche 928 - though would probably be as expensive to run as the RX7.

If only the PH Classifieds had a search by price function.

Ted - This would be a great idea.

220bhp 980kg, softop, has trouble going in a straight line , vaguely economical,

I think you might know the one

Might be up for sale sometime soon.

Anyway I'd highly recommend a supercharged 5, get on the mx5oc board theres a few peeps who'll take you out for a spin in one. MP62 boys are getting 300bhp out of them in a 1 ton car!

Yeah its been one if been thinking of asking for too.

I could increase the budget to 10k if I sold them both, but it still doesnt really open any extra options apart from an E36 M3 which im not keen on.

I dont want to spend loads of money on something if I might chuck it into a wall at a drift comp which im doing at the moment and would like to carry on doing.

You'd definitely find a Porsche 944 for this money which totally fits the bill.

MR2 Turbo... 245 bhp standard, and easy as punch to get 300+. Great handling, and a bit of a sleeper, as everyone seems to think they are the UK na cars!

Maybe true, but I didnt want a CA. And at the time I only got the S14 as a stop gap while the FD was broken, and just ended up keeping it.

Having looked at this myself you'd have a job to beat an mr2 turbo in standard trim and there's plenty you can do to it to make it go faster. That's what I'm going to be looking at anyway.

You could get a 300zx for that money but it would probably cost more to run or maybe a impreza wrx or a mits gto but I found them both dull to drive.

I'd love an rx7 but couldn't live with the fuel economy and the potential for expensive rebuilds.

A 944 S2 would be quite quick but not as quick as the mr2 but would handle as well and be a very nice car but 5k is a bit of as limited budget unless you're prepared to put some work in. A lux is a nice car but not as fast (if you want one you can 'have' mine).

If you'd consider two wheels then a blade like mine (other bikes are available) will completely blitz anything on 4 wheels in a straight line and give you much more of an adrenaline buzz absolutely everywhere and can be had for much less than 5k.

944

"Silverback Mike" is thinking of flogging his 944 to buy a TVR S-Series. You could pre-empt him and get in there quick. I'd imagine it won't be too much as he bought it from a salvage place with v. minor damage....

Yeah as I thought theres not much choice

I cant say I find the thought of an MR2 or a 944 very attractive.

Guess its back to thinking about what to do again.

the plan:

sell the SX, buy an american 2.5l scooby engine, and get an engineering company to fit that in your rex, and tuned to give 300 of each... awesome car with less rediculous mpg figures...

6 months later decide you need 4 seats, and sell the 2.5l boxer-rex to me for £10k.

What better plan could you think of!?!??

I can't understand how you get such poor mileage from yours...

Even when hooning a complete tank it's ~17mpg at worst for me and motorway gives up ~24.

Maybe it needs a remap - are you running the Apexi or do I remember right that you've got the Knightsports piggy-back ECU?

What's wrong with the CA engine? I hear a lot of people putting the CA in the S14.
