Chatting to a consultant engineer friend, he is about to install a speed detection system with the cameras mounted in cats eyes. It is a prelim test set up but we are stuffed if this works out. I believe it is going to be installed on the A38....

This cropped up a few years ago. I thought it had been scrapped due to the underhand spying tactics involved.

Mind you, I suppose they'd have to be painted yellow now?

And FFS think of the COST!!!

MMM, Wonder how said cameras will react to cars driving over the Cats eyes?

Or how they will react in winter getting covered with the "sticky salt" shite they insisted on trialling in Somerset.

Stuck to the car really well, cheers.
Also stuck to the road, but made it hideously slippery in the rain - marvellous.

Anyway, perhaps the sticky salt on the lenses will make the pictures unreadable....unless they fit each one with little windscreen wipers.

scared but happy

Thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump, thump.
No officer I was cleaning them.

You will be done for speeding but they would be blind for the car behind.

I saw on one site recently stating that if cats eye cameras are installed on a non trial basis that GPS detector systems can notify you along the same lines as static camera sites, I presume people loke Road Angel would notify their database for download.

Is this just a hoax, and if not, can someone explain how a cats-eye camera can work with any degree of accuracy?

What happens if the cats-eye is moved / dislodges over time by traffic driving over it? Surely this will affect it's accuracy?

To not cause an obstruction it will have to be flush to the road, similar to current cats eyes. So range will be pretty short. Tilt the thing back by a degree or two over time and it will be inaccurate???

Check on the web, there is quite a bit of information about them, I believe some are already being trialed in Scotland and near the South coast.

Hmmm.

So is this to make the roads safer than they already have done?

How can they justify MORE scamera's and more money to be spent on them when they clearly are not working as effectively as other measures to increase safety!

Just goes to show that they are for money only. Why else would they do this? What is wrong with the existing ones?

As you all say though, soooo easy to destroy "accidentally".

Burning a scamera down is obvious, and pre-meditated.

Accidentally dropping a pot of black paint over the cats eye while hurrying across the busy dangerous blackspot of a road would be a worthy reason

Would take a fair while to spot too

Also, even more reason than ever just to not wash your car. Let it get filthy so the plates are not legible.

These muddy dirty roads these days eh officer

If you braked really hard over them with sticky tyres, could you rip them out of the road?

And how does a camera that low photograph the driver?

I'm not questioning the fact the technology is available, more that whether or not it can realistically be deployed in a reliable fashion...
