SPEED CAMERA LOCATIONS

The AA is publishing the first road atlas to show the locations of speed cameras around Britain.

Safety experts accused the motoring organisation of encouraging drivers to break the law, but the AA claimed the maps would actually save lives.

Critics of speed cameras claim it is simply not possible for a motorist to drive any distance without risking points on their licence or even losing it altogether.

The AA supports this view, and is publishing new maps detailing the whereabouts of the dreaded yellow boxes.

The AA is also pointing out the locations the police favour for mobile speed traps that are often far more difficult to spot.

Much of this information is already available on the internet.

But this is the first time motorists have been given the chance to buy it in the shops.

About three million people fall foul of the cameras each year, but polls suggest nearly all drivers are in favour of them.

However, this is only the case where motorists believe a camera has been set up to help reduce accidents, not boost revenue through fines.
Can I assume all red-blooded PHers think this is a great idea?

Obviously employing the same excellent logic as the GPS detctor brigade, to whit:

"Ah, but surely your Safety Cameras are all located at accident blackspots, so we are surely helping your quest to lower accidents and fatalities by identifying these locations to motorists so that they can drive slower and safer there."

You can't argue with that.

Generally these surveys have very leading questions like "Do you think it is a good idea to prevent the death of children by placing a speed camera outside their schools and nurseries?"

Just a shame they are never situated there!

or "do you think paedos should be locked up for life and support the use of speed cameras?"

Erm, the whole point of a scamera is to SLOW people down at a black spot.

The best speed camera's would be those that caught NO speeders, so then "in theory" the area would be less dangerous.

Letting people know of black spots, which is only where cameras are placed is a good thing!

Own goal to the scamera partnerships imho. They can't have it both bloody ways!

Brake are very happy about this

Jeremy Vine had some blinkered old women ranting on about how this will just make people slow down for the cameras and speed everywhere else, and we all know that speed kills everyone on the planet.

Why dont these people put up and shut up?

I am in favour of them, actually. But I also have one of these, to stop me from getting clocked.

Overall, people need to remember that cars are rather dangerous machines. Many people don't. Speed cameras serve as a reminder.

If that was the case, then having 6,000 speed cameras across the country would imply having 6,000 accident black spots across the country.

That's an awful lot of black spots, which makes me think that most of the cameras aren't really sited at accident black spots.

BTW, you never see a speed camera removed do you ?

There must be some roads that have had speed cameras installed, but the accident record of the road improves, removing the original need for the camera ?

Just doesn't happen, does it ?

does actually .. on derby road in chesterfield a speed camera has been removed. and we have plenty of cameras outside schools/nurseries etc. In general I'm in favour of derbyshire's speed camera policy .. there seem to be very fedw on open road stretches so you cna still have a bit of a hoon if you desire but keeps speeds down in town where .. i don't hink many people would argue with this policy.

deliberate siting of cameras on open roads with little history of incidents is still happening elsewhere though, and that's a bad thing of course.
