Wing Mirror Housing - Help
Discussion
Oh what have I done.
Help is needed after I've managed to shear off my drivers side wing mirror whilst washing the car yesterday.(metal fatigue, not my stupidity I hasten to add)
As you can see from the pics it's not the tripod that has broke but actualy the metal back plate within the mirror housing.

Does anyone know if you can source just the back plate or an empty housing without all the gubbins (motors)to get a donor plate as I'm not looking to have a whole new housing sprayed up. (believe its from Citreon XM)
If this can be done, what is a budget cost.
Advice would also be appreciated in how to remove the broken part. I can see that it's connected to the tripod via a torx bolt from the underside but cannot see how the tripod is connected to the car. I've lifted the black plastic collar but am still non the wiser.
Many thanks
Craig

There's an externally threaded tube fixed to the door, a collar screws onto the tube, the tripod fits over the collar and is secured with a grub screw hidden under that plastic ring. You can take the tripod off either by turning it (unscrewing the collar from the tube) or undoing the grub screw.
I can't believe you've done that (sheared off the mirror), almost exactly what I've just done to my mirror!
I've finally seen where the grub screw is and despite people saying its difficult to get to - I would say its impossible, I don't think I can even be bothered to try.
Sorry I can't be of much help - other than to give sympathy as my own Trev lies with the mirror dangling down the door! I was thinking about using "gaffer tape" and having it paint coded

NB I did try unscrewing the tripod, but found that mine just rotated around the collar ie the grub screw that stops it rotating isn't tight enough.
No matter how many times I go back in the house have a coffee and think "that grub screw can't be that bad" I go back outside and think "Yes it bl**dy is"I think I'll be quite happy to pay someone to fix mine.
NB I actually did it trying to fix my door release button
