Door Mirror Removal
Discussion
OK, I've stopped laughing now. Supposedly you can lift the black sleeve and see the grub screw, but it will be quite low down into the boss of the mirror ie below the body of the door.
For me I couldn't lift the black sleeve up enough to see anything and now I know where the grubscrew is, I know there would have been no way for me to have got to it from lifting the black sleeve.
The other thing is, when you find the grubscrew there is no room to fit an allen key between the body work of the door and the head of the grub screw, so you have to cut an allen key down (with a hacksaw) to fit in the recess!!
What I did was take the glass out of the mirror, undo the 3 self tapping screws, mirror sort of falls in half and I managed to do what I needed from there, but you also get a better view of the grub screw 'cause you can lift the sleeve up and out the way.
No matter how many time I looked at the grub screw, I decided it was impossible to get to, it would be easier to replace the door

OK what happend for me was:
I took the glass out, then undid the 3 screws that held the mirror housing.
I could then get inside the mirror to undo the screw that held the mirror to the mirror base (the bit attached to the door) Once this was undone, the mirror came off (with wires still attached) but leaving the bottom part of the mirror (ie the bit where the black sleeve goes) still attached.
You can then lift up the black sleeve and you have access to the "tripod" bit which is what the grub screw is securing to the "boss" which is then screwed to the door!
You could then turn the tripod to unscrew it from the door "boss", but in my case the grub screw wasn't tight enough and the tripod just span around without unscrewing itself.
It would certainly be easier to undo the grub screw once you've got to this stage, but you won't beleive how awkward the grub screw is to get to!!
Depends what you need to do - I'm happy to explain more if this is all clear as mud

Went through the same problem myself the other week. As you can see, to get to the grub screw is virtually impossible.
But with what you need to do, i would think by doing it your way you would have to cut the cables and rejoin after you've had the outsides painted, unless you can worm the connectors from behind the speaker through the hole of the boss and tripob. or unless your going to spray in situ.
Have fun.

Know this post is very old now, but having the same problem! Several of the posts speak of just removing the glass? Does the glass just pull out or do i have to remove it in some way to not break it?
Thanks
To remove the mirror glass, use the controls to tilt the mirror up as far as it will go.Thanks
Then, looking under the glass you will see a small tab, this should be movable sidweays(can remember left or right), this then releases the glass.

Holey thread revival. I have the dreaded spinning mirror and have got as far as removing the glass and separating the body of the mirror. Now I can't find the grub screw or get the mirror itself off.
I'm putting a big flat head screw driver in the collar in the door mirror and giving it a thump. Nothing. It's had a good spray of WD40 too.

You can pass an Allan key through the sikaflex on the inside of the door that seals the aluminium window guide, the mirror will be slightly upwards, but you can tighten it then turn the mirrorI'm putting a big flat head screw driver in the collar in the door mirror and giving it a thump.
