How do you punch someone properly?
Discussion
I've never (so far) been in a situation where I actually have to punch someone properly, so how do you actually do it? Is there a specific movement you are supposed to make, and are some types of punch that are more effective for certain situations?
This is directed mainly at people who practise martial arts btw.

From my experience don't ever swing. Drawing your arm back gives them too much time to try and duck - if you connect decently with a nose/jaw/eye then they'll go down like a sack of shit anyway. Also use your weight and punch straight through them - imagine your target isn't their nose but infact the back of their head; you just have to go through their nose to get to it.

There are many different types of punches, several of which (without much force) will hospitalize your enemy.
Your best bet, if you are in danger, is to break someones nose. The pain will blind him, and unless he is drunk possibly stop him.
Kicks can be just as effective, but if you dont know what you are doing, entirely ineffective.
as 2SB said, speed is everything.

Is it actually true that punching upwards onto the nose can really break the nose, piercing the brain thus resulting in death?
I'd hate to be in a position of self defence going for a jaw and ending up in court charged with man slaughter!!!
I have it on very good authority that this is untrue. The nose bone is very weak and the skull very strong by comparison.- The nose bone would just desintegrate.

so go for the face, preferably the nose trying to punch through the head. And don't pull back, just go for it...hmmm...
So assuming I've done that, what do I do then (well apart from leg it) - kick them when they are down (cowards way?) or something else?
Depends whether you're likely too see em again. When I was being bullied by the local tearaway, I ambushed him, then really give him a good duffing on the basis he just might not mess with me again. It worked.

so I assume an upward thrust of your palm into the perpetrators nose would delay them long enough for you to leg it
Up to you ! If you've stunned your foe, a simple kick in the bollox will put him down. Depends how many there are. More than one? incapacitate them as quickly as possible, then move on to the next quick!, or while they recoil from your initial move, take it on your toes (highly advisable if there are more than one). Whatever you do, do it quick, mean it, and then get out quick before they come to their senses and fall on you en masse.

During my defensive skills week we were taught to punch from the waist/mid chest straight into the solar plexus just under the breast plate. When punching you should clench your fist with you thumb over the top of middle part of your index finger so as not to break your thumb. When punching just punch straight forward but imagine punching the person 3-4" behind where you are actually gonna hit and also when throwing the punhc, at the last second swivel on your hips towards the subject. Dont jab, punch through the object. This is also the same for using elbow strikes.
