Are self Adhesive reg plates legal or not?
You know like the ones that were on the original Lotus Elan.
If they are where can you get them?

From www.dvla.gov.uk/faq/faq_number_plates.htm

Are stick-on number plates legal?

No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics on the number plate. This includes:

Visibility
Strength
Reflectivity
The British Standard also requires that a number plate must be marked with the following information: -

The British Standard Number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trade mark, or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier. (The company who actually make the number plate.)
The name and postcode of the supplying outlet. (The 'supplying outlet' is taken to mean a company whose business consists wholly or partly of selling number plates.)
A non-reflective border and the Euro-symbol with the national identification letters are optional additions.
There shall be no other markings or material contained on the number plate.
Further information about the British Standards requirements can be obtained at www.bsi-global.com.

They are not legal. It's discussed a lot on www.mx5ocforum.co.uk . But if you want one contact ady on that site. Thats where I got mine from.

With numberplates the thing that gets you pulled is having silly fonts or silly backgrounds. So long as plod can look in their rear view mirror and easily read a numberplate they dont seem to care. And it doesn't need to be legal to pass the MOT. Just needs to exist.

edit: www.solargraphics.net is the company ady works for

No,

But would you be pulled by the fuzz... probably not. most Tvr's have the stick on type and I've never heard of anyone having any problems.

I can't think of a single Tiv since the original tuscan/vixen that would use adhesive plates.

They are legal on older cars - E-Type anyone?

On a newer car they must comply with the construction and use regs in force at time of build - hence the reason black and white are still legal on pre-73 cars.

I've had a stick on plate on my MX-5 for about 8 years.

I've been pulled over by the rozzers a few times over that period, but they've never raised an eyebrow about the plate!

I reckon as long as its clear and you're not taking the p*ss with lettering spacing or cringingly sad fonts you're ok

Every other Land Rover in my local club has one, and no one has had any trouble over them. Just make sure they are close to 90 degrees to the road, the further you tilt them back (by sticking them on your bonnet for example), the more likely you are to get pulled for them. otherwise, whos going to tell the difference anyway?
