I would have thought that you need to have something to offer before you can start charging. Obviously £10 per year is not a great deal of dosh but its still £10. With no content to draw you to the site and a lack of users it is not goin to be that appealing. If you are set on charging I think that you will need to at least offer free sign up for the first few thousand to get the site going and lively.

Look at this very site for your business model, do you really want to charge people a membership fee, surely you will grow the user base far quicker without it and then you can look at advertising for your revenue. Also would of thought you will want some serious content, information pages, news, reviews etc. other than just the forums.

Indeed. Give me 15 mins and I can set up a rival forum to yours and it'll be for free. What will stop people coming to my forum rather than yours? Not a lot, especially as mine would be free and yours would be £10.

Now, if I were to do the same for a car forum then there would be very little to tempt people from here (PistonHeads) to there, especially since both would be free.

Don't worry, I'm not going to set up a rival forum to yours, I was just illustrating a point.
