Yes it's a V8 and you're looking at the back of the engine.

I had a rattle and clunk on first start up from cold, it never caused any problems, but I was'nt happy with it. Took it to the dealer who told Audi what they thought it was, and Audi said get the engine out and sort it. It was only a hydralic cam chain tensioner loosing oil over night, but they would not risk it failing at high revs, so they have replaced them all along with some of the chains, guides and sprokets ect, and yes I have seen the bill. Here's a useful link with some more W12 info...and it's VR6 beginnings! Also helped win a bet with a mate when I said my Golf has an 'Early Bentley' Engine.....Minus 6 Cylinders !
